Kingfisher --

Spray just a little o' that foam on the wheels... and wipe off after a minute. Works for me.

Speaking from experience, and not knowing if the X wheels are coated or not (and not willing to risk it)...I use a nice cleam sponge and lots of elbow grease.

I had an eclipse with the allow wheels and used Castrol SuperClean on them. It cleaned great but ended up removing the coating on the wheel and looking like crap.

I suppose that there has to be special wheel cleaning solutions on the market but I haven't tried any yet.

Good luck.

Wash your tires/wheels with the same car wash-water as the rest of the vehicle.
Since your wheels are clear coated just like the paint on the body, I would suggest waxing them also. The wax will help reduce brake dust and other contaminants from adhering to the wheels.

I have noticed in the past (w/ other cars) that if I would apply a lto of water pressure to front wheel/ disc, brake dust would fall off (some cars more than others). Is this harmful applying all that pressure?

Do not look any farther that straight Simple Green. Do not dilute, or breath the mist for that matter, spray on and wipe off. It can even degrease. The stuff is a must have. Road tar? Greasy paw prints from working on the truck? Simple Green my man.

Happy cleaning

Oh, yeah. 2001 Xterra SE,

You really should avoid blasting the center of the wheel with a high pressure hose, eg. Car wash, since it has the propensity to blow the grease out of wheel bearings.

I've been using Maguires Gold Class lately, and it works wonderfully. Spray it on, let it sit for a minute or two, then hose it off. I'm sure someone will jump in if this product harms the wheels, but I've had no bad experience with it so far.

I haven't used that on the X yet, but I do use it on my wife's Jetta. It works really well without any of that "etching" that get so annoying with most of these products.

To clean the wheels, I just use a little dawn liquid soap and a sponge. It really DOES cut through the grease and does a great job with brake dust!

I also use Meguires for cleaning the wheels. Hey Sc00ter, do you use the Simple Green to get road tar off the paint, or just the wheels.

Be careful though. Diswashing liquid is very harsh and will strip off your clear coat.

Somehow I doubt that, it's the same material used on the paint (just untinted paint) isn't it? That can handle some measly dish soap. It will take off wax, but not "paint"

That's funny your wife has a Jetta - my husband has one too! Looks like we're a good set of opposites.

One thing I've noticed since (the cleanup job after) my wheelin' trip is that Maguires doesn't work as well on mud as it does on brake dust and road grime. I actually had to rub some of it off with a towel instead of simply washing it all away. But it is still good stuff!

Whoa! ...and my wife has a Jetta! I think the Jetta is a good compliment to the X. The VW's solid on road performance is similar to the X's solid off-road performance.

If you have aluminum wheels it is best to clean your rims weekly or when they get dirty. Especially if they are polished aluminum rims. What happens to aluminum rims is when they get hot the pores open up and the dirt is let into the pores of the aluminum. When it gets into the pores it is very hard to clean the rims. I have seen some cases where the owner didnt take care of their wheels and the wheel was so dirty that we had to either polish them or use hard abraisive cleaning products on them just to get them clean. I take a bucket of car wash soap and a sponge at least once a week to clean my wheels. I also love to wash my X weekly and i usually spend like 4 hours cleaning it inside and out. Anyway, take care of your X and it will last you forever. WooWoo

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one who spends 4 hours cleaning my truck. It takes me even longer than that after a wheelin' adventure. I think my husband thinks I'm crazy, but I just like to have a clean baby.

My wife is crazy about her new X, and wants to keep it looking like the day we drove it off the car lot. Needless to say, I spend too much time keeping it clean for her. However, I do like to see the tires shine like they did on the first day. I've tried Armor All (gloss), but didn't look the same.
Anyone know what the dealer/service shop did to get the wheels so shiny? thanks.

Snowking -
Try Endurance tire gel from Meguiars. Yhey have a high gloss version that should make the wife happy.
Their web site: http://www.meguiars.com

The gel product is used with a supplied sponge applicator so there's no spray or foam to get all over the place.
