Well, I noticed a hole in my X beneath the right rear seat. When I took it in to the dealership, they said it was from the famous "fuel bracket" squeek that a lot of people have a problem with. They're going to have to send it to a body shop for a full grind, weld and seal.

Thought everyone might like to know so they can check out their rigs. Even if you don't have a hole, I'd look under the right rear wheel to see if the sheet metal is scarred.

I bought my '01 denim blue back in Dec. of '00 and a couple of days ago the squeaking noise started under the rear seat and I saw that crack and wondered what it was and luckily remembered this page. I have my appointment scheduled with the dealership for Tuesday. I'm crossing my fingers.

My rig is going under the knife on Wednesday. The dealership said it would probably take two days to complete. Good luck with your repair.

If you get any Sh*t from the dealer, take it somewhere else. I had two service guys and their manager looking at the hole. All three agreed within seconds it was from the bracket that was making the really bad squeak.

Come....On ....
I bent the fuel clamp so it wouldn't kreep any more, and filled the hole with body filler (4.99 PepBoys). Took me 20 Min.
I hate service departments, they rely on one thing, "lip service".
Two days to service it? One thing comes to mind "loaner car".
Fix it yourself, it gives you that satisfaction every X owner needs.

F-that, they broke it (by design), they're gonna fix it (their bill). I'm getting a loaner too, also on their bill.

Mine has a dent-no hole yet. The only thing I can find that is close to this area is the clamp that connects a rubber hose to a pipe that goes back to the evap box. This clamp has a section of heavy metal foil wrapped around it- possibly a fix from the factory. Is the problem caused by a clamp or a bracket? Do the 00 modles have the foil around the clamp?

Hmmm, my original post must have been vague...imagine that...

The fuel braket has already been removed, I had it pulled back in November. I just discovered the hole a few weeks ago. It is going into the shop tomorrow to have the hole fixed. If I knew then it was just a bracket (I had no idea what the sound was coming from) I would have just crawled under and tweaked it myself.

Where is this bracket? I can't seem to see it anywhere. If I look in the wheelwell, I see a black plastic cover and thet's it. Is it under that cover?

It is in the right rear wheel-well (SP?). I never saw it, so I can't help you more than that.

Talked to the dealer today - this problem affects 2000 and 2001 models...

Stu, Do you have an update on this? What did the dealer find when they repaired this? Was it caused by a bracket?

Got it fixed last week. Dropped my rig off at 7:30 and they called me at 3:00. The dealership took it to a body shop and had them clean, weld and re-seal the hole. Looks great and the corrosion warranty is still in full effect...so I'm happy

Way to go...use body filler and do a home repair. That will surely help your resale value! Did you use brown primer too, or did you just leave the grey putty look?

Sorry, but that's the silliest thing I've heard in awhile.

OK I'll tell my version of this story. You can see the bracket by looking in the wheel well (back, passenger side). Look for the truck frame, follow it forward, and where the frame curves down you'll see a bracket sticking straight up. It's bolted to the inside of the frame with a 3/8" bolt.

I got the squeak and tried to fix it before a hole wore through under the seat. I bent the bracket out a bit and the squeak stopped. However, it started again after several months. That time I pushed the bracket back in a small amount. That also stopped the squeak.

I could tell by feeling around the bracket that there was hardly any space above it, so I didn't feel secure with the "bend the bracket fix". This past weekend I removed the bracket, drilled a 3/8" hole just above the original one, then re-installed the bracket. This fix actually lowers the bracket by about 3/8", which will fix the problem once and for all.

While the bracket was off I took a look at the underside of the sheet metal near the seat. There was a very obvious "bracket sized" crease in the metal. I touched it up with paint to minimize the chance of rusting.

I strongly recommend this fix over the "bend the bracket", although it does take a lot more time and is a bit of a hassle.

Al, Thanks for the info. I stated in my first reply that I could not find a bracket that would cause this. My bracket seems to be different than yours. The bracket on mine is black plastic and is a push on snap connector. It is mounted in a 3/8 hole on the inside of the frame at the area you described. It is not high enough to even get close to the floor pan. It is so short that you can not see it when you look in the wheel well. You must lay under the truck. As I stated before, the only thing close to the floor pan is a hose clamp on an evap box line. This clamp has a heavy foil wrap around it. This is difficult to see. My x is a 2001 built on Dec 18. This short plastic bracket and the foil around the evap line clamp may be a factory fix. I would ask my dealer, but I know they will respond with a blank look. For those of you concerned, you may want to check and see if this is a fix available to dealers.

Very interesting! That's very different from what's on my X. I've got a black painted metal bracket, rectangular shaped, with a white plastic "hose clamp" pressed into the top end. Before I fixed it the metal bracket was jammed up against the underside of the sheet metal. My `01 Xterra arrived on the dealer's lot on August 31. It does sounds like Nissan has changed the design!
