I keep hearing different stories to both weight oils, but which one is the best???

Ever since the first oil change on the Xterra, Ive changed it with Full Synthetic 10w-30. I hear that 5w-30 is better because its easier on start-up and gives better fuel efficiency. Since 5w-30 is thinner though, do I have to compromise more engine wear?

Any suggestions would help. Im changing oil this weekend.

Check your owner's manual. I believe it says 5w-30. 10w-30 won't lubricate the upper part of the engine as well. This my understanding.

I'd stick with 5w/30w, as this is the preferred oil per the manual. Don't give your dealer a way out of honoring your warranty by using an oil that may not lubricate the top end of the engine as well.

You're not going to wear your engine out faster with 5W-30; in fact the viscosity is theoretically the same as 10W-30 when warm.
Keeping in mind that most engine wear occurs in the first few seconds of a cold start, the thinner oil may actually give you a longer engine life. The lubricated internals of an engine - sliding surfaces running at hundreds or thousands of feet per minute on a thin film of oil - have a different perception of "thin" than you got while pouring it out of the bottle. Lastly, the folks who determine those viscosity/temperature charts in the manual have a darn sight better and more relevant education than a highschool diploma.

Based on the owners manual, for your location 5W-30 is ideal for year-round use.

There is a recent news item from Ford that they are moving to a 5W-20 for all locations. Based on that and the past-decade more common use of 5w-30, it seems manufactures are learning that thinner oils are more beneficial overall.

That's way too early for synthetic, put several thousand miles on it before putting synth in. Hell you haven't even finished breaking it in fully at 1000. Most I've spoken to say 10k-15k before going synthetic.

There are a lot of different opinions on this subject for a lot of different reasons. Some are fact and some might have been fact at one time. Here’s the story.

Engine manufacturers have constantly improved their products as far as machining techniques. Tolerances and fits are much better than years ago. Most gasoline powered engines are pretty much broken in right away. You can tell this by the fact that thee is very seldom and oil consumption on a new car any more. Years ago the manufacturer used to recommend driving a certain speed for so many miles and then go faster etc etc. You don’t see that any more either. At one time there was actually a “break in “ oil used.

Keep in mind, engines will break in and piston rings will seat in engines using synthetic motor oil immediately, just somewhat slower. Cars such as the Chevrolet Corvette are coming off the line with synthetic oil in the crankcase. Diesel engines and remanufactured engines are the exception. Diesels break in slow because of the extremely robust components in them. It’s the nature of the beast. Reman engines often are not machined with the same precision with which the manufacturer builds them originally, and henceforth may require more break in.

We get asked this question every day. We spent a little more time explaining this for you because it seems there are several people looking for an answer. We hope this helps. Generally when someone asks this question we have a quick paste in answer which we’ll include below for you.

You may switch to AMSOIL at any time. However, all new engines have a certain amount of machining debris and contaminants. You may wish to capture these unwanted items in a less expensive oil and filter, and change it sooner than recommended. The exception would be Diesel engines or remanufactured engines for which a longer break in period with petroleum oil may be needed.

I switched to AmsOil 0W-30 at 1200 miles. Previously I would have waited until about 3000 miles but there were no metallic particles visible in the original oil when I drained it. At that point the engine was essentially "broken in".

Yup, 0W-30. All it means is that it flows better when cold than does 5W-30. AmsOil is an independent manufacturer of synthetics that has been making the stuff for around 30 years. They seem to have a broader product offering than Mobil1, especially with gear oils. I have used both brands with great success.

I converted all my fluids to Mobil 1 Full Synthetic and no problems, with 5w-30 in the engine.

Only been 2 months though so I don't know if that proves anything.

Plus they sell it by the gallon over the 'net. I'd be running it, but I just put in some Mobil1 about 200 miles ago. But when its time to change again...

I switched to 10W-30 at the first oil change. Since I live in Texas, I never encounter the cold temperature range that make 5W-30 a necessity.

I've also noticed that the 10W base seems to quiet the valve clatter that I used to hear during warmup.

I saw some lady today in the checkout line (i work in a grocery store) and she was buying 20w-50 motor oil!!! She was old and I was asking her if she was sure this is what her car took.... She said, "I always use the best motor oil". I walked her out to her car because she had a large order and she had a 1999 Toyota 4runner!!!

20w-50 oil for a new 4runner!!! That has got to be bad for it right???

Here in the AZ we change our oil to 10W30, the extreme heat and non-existant cold temps make 5W30 less desirable.

Every shop changes to 10W30 unless you ask for different. I changed to 10W30 Mobil1 at 6500 miles and every 7500 since...

OK I got more info on Amsoil. They have a 7500 mile and a 30,000 oil. and range between $5-6 a quart much less for a gal. or case.
The more people that would like some the lower the price. The lady on the phone told me that I could be a dealer for the X's. That is fine with me I'm not looking to make money (I LOVE my job.. at work after spending 4 hours online, XOC, I sat down for some TV ..my boss came in and told me to take a nap.) I just want every to get a good deal. If you think you might want some Amsoil shoot me an email.
thanks

So am I to assume that since I live in FL, that I should go with 10w-30? Changing oil for the first time tomorrow. Looks like I'll be going with Mobil 1 Synthetic 10w-30 with Mobil (Mi-110) oil filter? I'm at 30K and trying to do as much as I can with my limited knowledge to save me some bucks and not pay the ridiculous Dealer price for 30K service. Whatever I don't know how to do, I'll bring to a local auto shop (hopefully trustworthy auto shop)

For the summer that should be OK. I know it can get down into the 20's in parts of Florida in winter, might want to go back to 5W-30 late fall, though 10W-30 synthetic may flow as well as 5W-30 dino at those temps anyway.

okay... 5w-30 sucks.

changed the X from 10w-30 to 5w-30 and now the valves tick away even when im driving! Yes the oil level is fine and yes it is synthetic oil.

im going back to 10w-30 next oil change.
