From what I remember you'll need a 14 mil socket, 12 mil socket, a 10 mil and there was also a deep 12 I think I was using.

You have to take the factory "skid" plate off. Once you are looking up you'll see it. There are two bolts holding it in the back (pain in the damn ass to get to) and two in the front. Well, one in the front and the other one holding the tensioner. You also will have to reach and undo the harness, the power wire to the alty and then the ground.

Very little space to work with if you have big hands, and even if you don't...

I'm on my 5th alternator by the way. wink laugh

Yah, first time is a pain. I actually ended up accidentally ripping out the pigtail plug. Well, the plug was still on the alty but the wires accidentelly broke. Wiring was extended and all is fine. I can unbolt it now and take out the plug when I srop it down.

Alternator #14, holy s***! I've had the X 6 months belongs to my daughter, she hasn't done any mudding. Guess I'll tackle it tomorrow. What brand are you guys using? I've got a raman from NAPA.

Mine was Worldwide remans from Advanced Auto up till i got my job at a starter/alternator rebuild shop. Typically what goes bad atleast in my case is the bearings and the brushes and slipring gets too dirty to make contact. The ones i've rebuilt for mine were just sandblast the rotor and stator and use clear insulating paint on both, replace the bearings and check out the brushes then toss it back together and test. Last rebuild i had maybe $12 in it.

Also i'll always carry zipties. Last year at ECXC i thought my alt. was going so i changed it out with a spare but broke the adjuster hold bolt so i only had one bolt to keep the whole thing in place. I tensioned the belt as far as i could and ran zipties in through the side of the case to the frame rail and pulled as tight as i could get then ran the bolt in tight. Amazingly enough it got me 300mi home and held till i got the replacement bolt i needed 3 days later. lol

Zip ties and duct tape...What more do you need! One local shop rebuilds but I have not had very good luck with them before. The NAPA has a three year warranty. My insatllation went very well. I have to wonder who designed the setup. The oil filter is in the way, and the wires are very short. Took about an hour and three beers!

My bearings went out on my '03 alt and I picked up an OEM nissan quest alt from a junkyard for 40$. Lots more amperage and I didn't have to modify anything to get it in there. Best of all, it was way cheaper than getting a reman from anywhere laugh
