I was commenting with my family that in the last few years I have noticed a new trend in attitudes toward hispanics. Previously we were generally ignored by popular and political culture. Now there seems to be an increasing presence of our culture in American society as a whole. Major political issues are centered around us and we have politicians clamoring for our votes. Our presence in the entertainment sector has been steadily increasing, which we all know sets the tone for society as a whole. Seems like we are now in a situation where we are either liked or disliked but no longer ignored.

Now this does not come as a surprise to me. I live in a town that is 80% hispanic so trends happening in American culture have been present here since forever. It seems to me that there is a new paranoia about "losing" the country. Attitudes that were directed at other minorities are now centered on us. Well let me tell you that you should be afraid.

My father calls it the retaking of our land. Now instead of doing it by military means we are doing it with our educated people. That's right it isn't the poor families in the slums you should be worried about it is families like mine that are a threat. Where every member has at least a bachelors degree. We are taking your white collar jobs thereby taking positions of influence in your society. We speak a minimum of 2 languages each fluently. Our children will be harder to identify as mexican so you might just give that job to someone with brown in their blood. The day is not far where you will be cutting my grass. Sleep well.

Its too bad that for now you are the exception, not the rule. You probably live a life within the law. You went to school, got an education. Worked hard to get where you are within the system of this great land.

But it is people like you who piss me off more than anything. I could care less who comes to this country as long as it is done legally within the bounds of our laws and statutes. There is no racism in that statement. It is simply the way it should be. What we are losing this country to, is a culture of lawlessness and entitlements. Dont let your Hispanic heritage blind you to the fact that illegal immigrants come from all countries. They are called illegal because they broke the law. If you haven't broke the law I have no problem with you. If they came here legally more power to them.

But what I do not understand is why you dont have a problem with illegal immigration?

It seems you have a chip on your shoulder a mile wide. I have no problem dealing with any educated, intelligent person who pulls thier own wieght. I do have a problem with being taxed for free health care and welfare so that someone who broke the law can live better than me.

And one more thing, what do I have to be afraid of? Are you planning on breaking any laws or violating my rights?

You strike me as more racist than normal. Someone with "brown in thier blood"? I could care less if you were orange and purple if you were qualified and did things the right way. Isnt "cutting your grass" perpetuating a stereotype?

Maybe if you stopped whining about it and started to realize that illegal immigration affects us all, black, white, brown, yellow. You wouldnt be so angry and racist towards the rest of us.

I am going back to bed. [Sleep]

One look at the ingredient list for menudo causes any sane person to look elsewhere for food.

Also, was the point of your first post some kind of pathetic attempt at a threat? Just curious.

It kinda had a racist vibe to it.

You think menudo is bad? Try buche or tacos de cabeza. MMMMM

Just think at some point deep fried pig skin might have been considered gross. Now pork rinds are everywhere. It is called infiltration.

Ohh sheesh wow this is funny
That was a joke right....right
WOW its people like you that make the KKK seem reasonable sometimes. Retaking of your lands, your joking right. Wow you see here it is people the militant idiots with college educations (college dont mean smart nor does it mean educated)

What you need to understand is the majority of America doesnt mind hard working mexican/canadian/european/WHOEVER coming into this country to work as long as they are legal.

Oh and besides the fact that a GOOD large percentage of the mexican population in the south, is involved in gangs and drugs AND smuggling of illegals, Doesnt really help your cause all that much.

imcase i got nothing against you personally however i do have something against your militant attitude. If it was a joke than good if not than you need to re-evaluate.
Id hate to have to defenstrate you for no reason what-so-ever.

(I)imacsae why are you so bitter? Is there a particuar reason why you have such a gigantic chip on your shoulder? The foundation of positive immigration is intergration not segregation.

If you want to call yourself an American and make a contribution to the country that you live in so be it. Why must the successes or failures of a particular culture fall under the banner of a foreign country? Did the Mexican education system allow you the chance at a higher education?

Did the Mexican government provide you with the lifestyle that you currently enjoy? No. You are an American of Mexican herritage. You are no longer a Mexican, unless of course for some idealistic reason you carry Mexican citizenship.

As long as minority cultures continue to stand under banners like "brown pride" and insist on standing out from the crowd they are perpetrating the same racism that they decry.

Your blood isn't brown, it's red. Just like everyone elses.

Have to agree with MB on this one. It's the constant search to always find a way to bring race into an argument that's bleeding this country and giving me gas. I prefer to look at it as those who contribute to society vs. those who don't. :p

Deep fried pork skin is still considered gross by me. I'm not worried at all about proliferation of prork rinds, those who like them will all die of heart disease within a few years.

A Good percentage? I strongly doubt that. Geez there are so many of us down here that if we controlled that much money then we would already own the government. I mean come on a campaign contribution is just a thinly veiled bribe.

Socal I am not an american of mexican descent I am a mexican living in america. My father works for the mexican government and he paid for my school so yes the government did provide for my higher education. As well as that of my brother and sister. All of my families income until graduating college has come from mexico thereby providing our lifestyle. So what is your point.

Oh and I would never ally myself with any militant hispanic organizations. They are counter productive. You are right that integration is the way to resolve conflict. There is no point trying to change a society from the outside. The key is to enter the society and form it to your needs.

Oh and "Bitter?" Are you kidding me I am one of the happiest people you will ever meet.

In your dreams maybe. Personally, I'd pit my level of education against your's anyday, and I wouldn't even lose one wink of sleep over it. You'll have to "Stir the Pot" better than that to get the response from people you're looking for.

I got no problem with Mexicans, or anyone else. I grew up in San Antonio, so I have been around the culture a lot. I used to love going to my friend's uncle's house, drinking mass quantities of Negro Modelo, playing pool, and listening to his old ass grandpa play the squeeze box. If you get here legally and become a citizen you are my brother. America has and always will be filled with diverse cultures. It is whay makes our society great.

My mistake. At first I thought you were an educated immigrant who believes that social change is happening and wants to be a part of it. Now I see that you are just a social elitist who recieved an American education who doesn't understand the culture he is a part of because he is isolated in a border town while becoming increasingly detatched from the country he came from.

Again. My apologies.

It's good to see that you are so proud of the Mexican government. The same Mexican government that was run by a dominant and often corrupt PRI since it came into power at the end of the 20's. The same Mexican government that has had to repeatedly restructure their police force and millitary due to contunuous corruption.

The significant obsticles Mexico has to overcome concerning health care, education as well as quality of life issues are not going to be solved by increasing the number of Mexican people into the U.S.

Having more Mexicans in the US is not going to keep dogs from crapping into and kids from playing in the water suppy in Mexico City. The U.S. has gone over and beyond the call of duty in supporting Mexico and supporting Fox in his reforms.

In return we get increased demands from Fox in how many people we are supposed to allow to emigrate, demands on how immigrants should be treated and the expectation of amnesty for anyone that is able to cross the border.

NAFTA has taken a significant number of jobs away from Americans and taken those jobs, along with significant U.S. investment across the border. Resorts like Cancun, Mazatlan, and Cabo San Lucas are beiing infused with American capital that is providing jobs and an improved quality of life in those areas.

The Mexican reliance on the U.S. for aid and investment is extrordinary. So why don't you look in your own backyard. Why aren't you taking your education and success across the border to help make your country a better place to live?

Why, because you realize that the quality of life and the opportunities for a succesfull life are here. That's why you probably chose to stay in the U.S. to attend college. You understand that the importance of education is much higher here and thusly there is a vastly superior educational system.

The importance of education is not as culturally important in Mexican culture as putting in a hard days work. Mexans aren't coming into this country to take high tech and high income jobs, they are coming in to take shit jobs, the jobs that a lot of Americans don't want to do.

And good for them. The life that they are able to carve out here from an 8 dollar an hour job is a hell of a lot better than the cardboard house with the dirt floor and the dollar a day job they left behind. They are able to have a decent place to live, clean water, clean streets and good schools for their kids.

Oh yes, schools. As a husband of a teacher in a Compton elementary school, what I see and hear about is a struggle first hand. First of all over half the entire school district in Compton is hispanic. 99% of all the kids in the district are on free lunches and breakfast programs. They are poor, they are from blue collar families and their parents work hard.

Most of the parents speak minimal or no english. They don't attend parent teacher's conferences, they don't help their children with their homework. Not because they don't want to or don't care, but because they themselves don't understand the language or the material. For the most part the disciplin problems that she deals with are far and above what she would find in a less depressed climate. And there is hardly ever any follow through from the parents even in repeated discipline issues.

Of course there are some kids that are able to rise above their station in life and show promise, work hard and have supportive parents that truly understand the value of education. But they are the exception rather than the rule.

What does this all mean? Well, just having vast sheer numbers of people here doesn't mean a damn thing. Realizing the importance and value of education, fitting within the structure of the system, looking beyond the here and now and looking at making a lasting contribution have got to be goals of Mexican immigrants before any "revolution" takes place.

Once Mexico becomes a place that people don't want to excape from to realize the American Dream but a place where their citizens want to live because it is a great place to earn a quality living and educate their children you will see your revolution.

Until then, Mexico will still be viewed as merely a source of cheap labor for American business on both sides of the border. A nice place to visit but no one really wants to live there.

I guess I was wrong about you. I think you are somewhat of a racist. I'm sure when you get together with your Mexican buddies the racism flows. When around whites you probably put up a facade and are on your best behavior.

My father calls it the retaking of our land

You know what? Your father sounds like a real jerkoff. I'm sure he is a racist. It's not his land or your land. Plus if he works for the Mexican government he is also a corrupt socialist. No one abuses Mexicans more than the corrupt Mexican government. Tell your father from me he can go Fuck himself. [Finger]

We took the rest of the country from the indians and gave them the "blessing" of Oklahoma, where nothing can grow in the soil...

We took Texas from the Mexicans and put up a barrier that they now run, jump or swim through to get back to their land.

But you know what? That's history. If everybody stayed where they came from or had been routed out of, we'd all live in the middle east...

so all of this "us," "we," "them," BS...it needs to stop. America's borders, for the moment, belong to America. If they're not a CITIZEN of the US, then they need to go back to where they came from. It doesn't matter what RACE they are...I don't give a crap if they're British, Spanish, South African, Portugese, Russian, Saudi Arabian, Mexican, Canadian, or any other country. If they're not a citizen of the US, or are not willing to go about obtaining legal status as an American, then POOMP! Punt them back. But this taking over the country threat crap you're spewing. Forget about it....

Wow you guys call me the racist when you are the ones that take it to that level. Anyway I was only partially joking in my original post. I have noticed a trend lately that focuses on the hispanic component of the U.S. I do feel that for the first time ever hispanics are aknowledged as a real part of the culture. I actually have always joked about mexicans taking over. The truth is that society and culture will change over time as those with differing backgrounds gain positions of influence. I truthfully have felt a backlash coming for many years now. As any new component in society spreads there are inevitably those who have a problem with it.

Socalpunx really had some good points in his post. Many Mexicans living in this country have had trouble adjusting and have distanced themselves from their own culture. It is sort of a catch 22 of my generation. We are not from here but we tend to identify with the society in which we were raised.

I posted the grass cutting comment and the be afraid one as a dig to bring in some discussion. As Sd-xterra pointed out I do this from time to time for my own amusement.

NYMADMAN I respectfully ask you to refrain from insulting my father and keep your comments centered on me. Although since you don't really know him or me your comments are unfounded and unimportant. [Finger]
I mean come on it is silly to call me a racist. I love everybody. Especially white chicks. Oddly enough living in a city that is 80% hispanic my best friend is an irish guy.

Anyway the point is that there definitely exists a paranoia that what I alluded to in my original post is actually happening. That minority groups in some way are plotting to take over the country. This of course is ludicrous. The country is made up of those who live in it so you can't take over something you are a part of.

Oh and if you notice I never brought in the discussion of illegal immigration that was you guys. Get with the program guys if we can't joke about these issues then they become to large to deal with.

If you want me to refrain from making comments about your father, then don't post idiotic things that he says. ("My father calls it the retaking of our land.")

You are the one who brought him into the dialogue so it's fair game. You don't like it too bad. Don't repeat any of his idiotic comments. If your father really feels that way then he can go to hell.

Also illegal immigration is not about racism. It's about the rule of law and criminals who have no regard for our laws.

Racism is people like you telling us "whitey's" you should be afraid..
