Just as we were going to bed tonight I looked out the window and the northern lights were out. There's too much light in town to really see them, so we got bundled up and drove out to where it was dark. We hung out about two hours, but they never really came back as good as they were earlier. By the time I took the picture with the truck it was pretty dim.

Are those touched up any or are they straight off the camera?

It's an older camera and on long exposures the sensor has some noise that shows up as litte spots of color. They look like the stars do except they're random colors. You can see a couple in the bottom of the top picture. Anyway, I took a couple of those out of the second picture, but other than that didn't do anything thing to it. The first picture I didn't do anything to.

That noise can be removed using a "dark frame" exposure and image editing software.

Damnit; my monitor settings must be way screwed up. Practically all I see is darkness and I certainly don't see your Xterra in there. OK, must try and get the settings right!

First time I saw the lights I was in NW Montana hunting elk! Totally cool chromatic colors!

Ah, now that the sun has gone past the South window next to my computer, I can see more!

I knew some cameras used that process, but I didnt realize it could be done to fix a photo. Now I'll have to play around with it...Thanks for the link Ian.
