If the shocks are upgraded on the rear of the X, is there any interference with the rear sway bar? If there is, would an inverted install with the shocks alleviate this problem?

You can't clear the rear swaybar w/ the Rancho's--I'm not sure if you flip them over if you can still do it, but honestly I don't think you'll miss the swaybar after the Ranchos are installed. On the flipside, I think Carlton's shop in TX (Fabritron?) manufactures disconnects that allow you to use the Ranchos (oriented properly) and the rear swaybar, if you do decide you want it installed.

Even the stock right rear shock hits the sway bar.
It has been redesigned for 2002 (If I recall).

I understand that some X owners (carlton mcmillan) are using the RS9156 on the front. The RS9156 from my understanding has a different mounting attatchment from the Xterras mounting bracket on lower portions of the shock and the A arm. What needs to be done to make the shock work?

Hey Blenderhead e-mail me if you want the info on what to do to fit the RS9000's up front, I made a write up the first time I did it and saved it. I would recommend you replace the torsion bars up front before the shocks though if you feel the front end is too soft, the RS9000's help a bit but not as much as new torsion bars would. tbfrank@cptclabs.com

You can clear the rear swaybar with the Rancho's 9000 9116-- just tap the swaybar over a 1/2 inch or so to clear. Some stock
swaybar installs have the bar installed close the right side like mine did. When installing the 9116's i centered the swaybar.

won't the sway bar shift back over to it's original position? Have you noticed any change since you tapped it over? Thanks.

Just looked at the sway bar today after 4x4
"lots of mud and snow driving " this weekend and yes it moved back into it's old
placement. Dam! The shock is ok but now I am not so sure if the shock will not get dented later on.

just remove the sway bar for testing purposes. see if you notice the difference with the Rancho's on there. then put the sway bar back on and see if you notice the difference again. I found that the difference was negligable, so i removed my sway bar and threw it away. the rancho 9116s compensate for a lot of the sway. If it is too much for you, then figure out another option. no need to solve a problem if you don't have to.

try and see. can't hurt to test it, no?

I can't seem to convince the local Rancho dealers that the Rancho 9116's exist. Hmmmm.... I wonder if they are just behind the times, or what? Anyone know why this might be?Also, what is the definitive answer on the front shocks, should they be replaced? I will be getting the ARB in the front, so a little added weight, but is it enough such that the shocks need replacing?

Hey Kafka...no offense, why don't you wait and get your X before you decide what parts you need to replace? You're not going to get a concensus answer on pretty much anything from this board...case in point, my front shocks bottom out ALL THE TIME, onroad and off. Furthermore, I've been going out so often it's not worth the time to reconnect the front swaybar after each run, so if I had better front shocks, they might help control the roll better, and my X wouldn't be a land yacht all week long. Different people have different opinions/needs.

I didn't plan on getting a concensus. I mean, I have only been on this board a little while and I can see pretty plainly that people have very different opinions regarding everything from Animal Right's to Abgreviations, I assumed that some would say one thing and some another. The reason I am not waiting until after I get my X is that I am getting it in about a week and a half. I live in Chicago, in a dorm room. I would need to purchase the items and have them shipped to my house in Lebanon, MO so that I could install them. However, if I don't have them ordered and ready by Spring Break, The end of March, then I would have to wait until the middle of July to install the parts that I want. I am not presupposing anything, but on the same note, I want to get opinions about what I should do before I learn the hard way.

Hey gothamist, do you remember BorderPhreak? He had like 350+ posts talking all about Xterra's and he didn't even own one yet. I wish I knew about this website before I purchase my Xterra, but I didn't till a year later and NOW I am learning about how much you can do and experience with one of these babies. So give him a little break :> I got to stick up fo' my club homies!

Kafka: I'm with you. I don't own one yet either, but will definately be getting one in a month or so. I'm on here to find out as much as I can.

The car I currently have is a Merkur XR4Ti, and I am a member of a few email based mailing lists for the car, which have helped solve many problems and provide many performance upgrades. The people on the Merkur lists are like people here, very helpful. And.. the list is more like a cult, just like here.

You guys obviously missed my point. I'm not against anyone trying to get as much information as possible, whether they own an X yet or not--that's the whole point of this and the other boards/lists. What I am against is the increasing tendency of people to not think for themselves. If you need new tires or not is something that no one else can tell you--it all depends on what you do and want. If you need new front shocks, it will be painfully obvious--it's not something you need 1200+ other people who have never met you and know nothing about you to tell you.

Ok.. ok. I see what you mean. I'm just here to learn, so once I do have mine, and decide myself that I want to replace something, I know what the best optionS are.. and I stress options plural. Then I will weigh the few options available and decide. I won't take someones word that this certain part should only be replaced by this aftermarket part etc.

I'll decide whether or not I need new shocks, and if I do, I'll use the list to help decide which ones.

speaking of swaybars what's up with the swaybar drop arm. I was disconnecting the rear swaybar. starting with the drop arm top side connection, and the bolt is free spinning in the ball joint after about 4 turns. I am now forced to grind the bolt off to remove. not a very good design.

I had no such problem when I removed my drop arms. I just had a wrench on the other side holding the opposite nut and It came right off hassle free.

Well, for my part, I know that I want new tires. I know that the stocks are not going to work for what I want to do and for what I need. The rear shocks are simply a matter of convenience. I have the money now to buy them, I know the benefits, I know the costs, and I know that I want them, so why not buy them now, when I have the dough and the inclination. As for the front shocks, I thought that if people had good opinions about them, then I might as well get them now, once again while I have the money. I still don't know what aftermarket shocks fit the front, if any.
