#269773 - 08/08/03 09:27 AM Wheel (not tire) Sizing

OK, I have read every thread I could find about wheels and tires, and still have a specific question that I don't think has been answered.

I have a Silver 2000 XE, and want to get a second set of wheels for swapping/offroading/etc. I am being picky and want a steel (read inexpensive) black wheel. So, this leads me to the American Racing 767 (aka Rock Crawlers, aka Unique 42). But, in the Xterra bolt pattern (6 x 5.5), I can't find a steel wheel anywhere near the Xterra OEM wheel specs (15 x7 with measured 5 1/2" backspace). The closest anyone will even custom buils is a 15 x 7 with 4 1/8" backspace, or a
15 x 8 with 5 3/8" backspace. I have tried the custom 15 x 7s with 31x10.5x15 BFG ATs, and they rubbed like crazy up front as I expected. This wouldn't be minor trimmin, it would be bumper removal. Now, the 15 x 8s would put a little more of the tire/wheel inside the wheel well compared to the 15 x 7 I tried, but not by much.

Now to the question. Does anyone have a 15 x 8 steel wheelset (with black fininsh) with 31s on a 2000 X that is not lifted? If so, what is the backspacing, where did you get them, how much were they, and what if any trimming was needed. I'll cut the truck up some, but the previous attempt would have been ridiculous.

Thanks for reading the long, drawn out question.

Can't find any on www.tirerack.com It just shows two types of alloys that are expensive.

Like I said, I can find some steel wheels for about $35 a piece that I like, but it is the sizing I am concerned with. If I order the
15 x 8s with the custom 5 3/8" backspace, and they don't work (i.e. rub too much), I now own some wheels I can't use.

powderskier,
I should have described how I found them in more detail. Set up a winter tire package and you will see you have the option of two steel wheels, one black, the other chrome...these won't show up under the regular wheel section, but they will sell them to you outright without any tires on, I have done this in the past.
That being said, you can rest assured that the backspacing will be correct, as it's a Nissan take off rim.

Have you considered painting stock steel rims black? From my extensive research, I've determined that offset does not change when the wheels are painted (just kidding). smile

Thanks Bogatyr and IggyB.

I'll look into those steel rims at tire rack. Funny thing is, why do the makers of the wheels I was lookning at say you can't make a steel wheel with that backspacing, yet we know it exists.

Anyway, hopefully these may work. And yes, IggyB, painting some OEM wheels is a thought, but they are more expensive in the first place, and I want two sets of wheels.

Thanks again

I'll just keep talking to myself now.

Got excited too soon. Should have known that when you said "Winter Wheels," that they would be more narrow. They only come in a 15x6 which is why they can get away with a bit less back spacing.

Anyway, the 31x10.5x15 BFG ATs won't fit on a 15x6. Only on 15x7-15x9 according to BFG themselves. mad

Sure they'll fit. BFG says a 32x11.50 should go on 8-10" wide wheels, but we know darn well they'll fit just fine on the stock 7" wheels. Go for it.
