I took my X to the dealer today cause my truck started to give of a brake or clutch like odor after driveing 15+ mins.

They said it was probably the brakes due to the BFG 285 A/T's I put on and the added weight of the shrock bumper.

Anyone else have an issue?

Any high performance brake pads out there to help out?

Any other comments?

Just get some limited life time warranty pads like the Duralast Gold pads at autozone. "DESIGNED FOR MAXIMUM DURABILITY AND STOPPING POWER." Mabey those will help.

Adding a bumper that weighs about 100 lbs, but taking off the OEM one that weighed about 40 lbs, means that your truck can't handle an extra 60 lbs?

The truck comes with 32's...for the OR model for example...we have tons of X-ers running 33's on pre-'05's that came with 29's from the factory...w/o your problem.

Guys I wheel with with 33's on '05+'s...no problems.

In 15 minutes of driving...even if all down Lion's Back...its not enough to overload the brakes with that smalll a difference.

So - Obviously the guy is looking for something to blame your problem on so its out of warrenty.

Tell him its BS, and that if he doesn't take care of it under warranty...that Dealer Service Evaluation Card is getting filled out slamming their integrity.

Get an honest dealer if you have to. It can be a Diogenes-like quest.

Well, if this is the level of expertise for this dealer, I wouldn't let him wash the truck, let alone work on mechanicals.

I'd find a local mechanic others recommend....pay them for the diagnostic work, and then contact Nissan Corporate about the situ....or just fix it and move on.



PS - I seem to remember a bunch of people with new X's mentioning a similar odor after a short drive...but I think only when it was wet out?

and Delaware, what about the Goodrich TA/KO's. i'm on like my 8th set over the years and i think they fit the good on the road, snow and mud pretty well.

Costco sells the TA KO's. Was going to stop there and see how much they are.

I had Wrangler ATS's on the 01 and I was very happy with those but want to try something else now.

Ahhh but the weight of am 8 year old is different than the rotational weight of the wheels and tires. Bigger, heavier tires equals more rotational weight, and a heavier workload for your brakes. Nice article from Tire Rack: http://www.tirerack.com/wheels/tech/techpage.jsp?techid=108

You think the difference in rotational mass is so great that it would cause brake failure?



I went from 29's to 33's, and I brake better than stock due to a massive contact patch...no losses observable at all, let alone due to the tires being heavier.

And braking the rotational mass of a ~ 50 lb tire, vs the weight of a 2 ton truck, is not the same thing...

IE: If I could make the truck weigh 100 lb less, or make the tires weigh a few lb less each...I'd stop more easily with the truck lighter and a few lb extra for the tires everytime.

Otherwise, merely having the STEEL WHEELS instead of the Alloy Wheels would cause the brakes to fail.
