I purchased my 2001 4x4 SE last March and immediately replaced the feeble stock General Grabbers with 30x9.50-16LT Mickey Thompson Baja Belted HPs ($125 x 4 at Discount Tire). Although the tires LOOKED great and cleared, this was NOT a wise decision. Why? They were too small and were nearly 50% worn after just six months. Last week, I replaced the Mickey Thompsons with 265/70R16 BFG All-Terrain T/A KOs ($177 x 4 at Discount Tire). This WAS a VERY wise decision. The ride is greatly improved and the slightly larger size looks great. Downside? They are not a common size, so I had to wait a week for shipment from BFG. They DO rub a little in the front in some turning scenarios. This is not damaging, but I may do some minor trimming to plastic on the rear portion of the front wheel wells. Cost, but I guess if you buy a $25,000+ vehicle you should be able to spend a few dollars on the appropriate tires...right? If not, stick with the stock Generals (less than $50 each at your local tire dealer.) They work well on Xs and mini-vans alike. Have fun!

Hey Snatch, if I may call you that laugh
Thanks for your first-hand opinion on Michey Thompsons. Trimming the wheel well shouldn't take you too long. I did it (with some help from a fellow soxc) in 20 minutes with an exacto knife. Enjoy the new meat!

Hey, I'm a snatch fan, too! laugh

Yeah, the MT tires are overrated, IMO. Certainly overpriced. I looked into them initially, but their sizing didn't jive with the tires I wanted, and getting them wasn't as straightforward as I'd have liked.

I ended up getting the Interco TrXus tires. A little leery at first, but once they were on the truck, I fell in love with 'em. Tires really do make a world of difference, especially over the crappy stock tires...

Glad to hear your experience went well (the second time) and you won't regret the BFG AT tires - they're very well liked and really do perform.

Caution: miles of smiles ahead! laugh

Okay, so I need to clarify that my namesake is derived from my admiration for the movie. Interpret at will... Thanks for the positive responses.

That tire looks like its says Wrangler AP
not APT. I think the APT is more of an aggressive tread.

Dunlop RV's are pretty decent tires that aren't too expensive. I was quoted around $107/per a while back.

If you're gonna upgrade, you probably want something significantly more agressive than stock. I mean I took my longtrails on deep snow and mud. Yes they kinda sucked but I got by (got winched a few times). Then I got MTR. WAY better traction than stock and that made it ok to spend the money on them. You may want to look at the GY MTR, Interco Trxuc or BFG MT or AT to get your upgrade's money worth.

I'm still EXTREMELY pleased with the BFGs. The trimming took less than half an hour and was VERY minimal. I removed the front plastic pieces (3 screws and 2 press fit fasteners each that "pop" right off and "snap" back in), trimmed off a 3/8" x 3" strip with a jig saw, and wet sanded both trimmed pieces. (I essentially removed the mud flap mounting holes. Since I'd already removed and sold the lame factory mud flaps, they were not an issue.) I believe my gas mileage is better than stock, but I'm not sure of the precise MPG number. I do drive 50 miles roundtrip city/highway each day + weekend trips and fill up only once a week. If necessary, take the time to special order this exact size. I had mine in less than a week and they are a PERFECT fit and look. Good luck!

I have a 2002 with 16" wheels and was going to have the Baja Belted HP's installed until I read your message. I had them on my Isuzu Amigo and they worked fine, but I think the light weight of the vehicle may have had something to do with it. I was going to get BF Goodrich Mud Terrain 265/75 R16. Which are a little taller in aspect ratio. I don't know if going up to a 75 will change the dimensions more than I want. I have heard conflicting stories about if they will fit or not. Is the BF Goodrich 265/70/R16 larger that the Grabbers of the same size? I know that sometimes, the size is general as far as the exact measurement goes. Any suggestions? 265/75 or 70 16? I am willing to adjust the torsion bars if need be. Take it easy.

The Mickey Thompsons have always been my first choice, but the size options are limited and I was really not pleased with them on my X. You do NOT want 265/75 R16 tires - any brand, unless you are prepared to install a lift kit. They will not clear properly, even with cranked torsion in the front. The 265/75R16 BFG Mud Terrains are 31.9" x 10.5" mounted on a 7.5" wheel. WAY TOO MUCH TIRE TO CLEAR! People purchase them because 265/75R16 is a VERY common size that is readily available at all tire shops. The 265/70R16 BFG All-Terrain T/As I installed are 30.7" x 10.7" and are the PERFECT size. Again, you will probably have to special order, but the short wait is definitely worth it. As for the stock General Grabbers, mine were 255/65R16 which equates to a measly 27.5" x 10.4" on the stock wheels. I like aggressive tires and was reluctant to go with the BFG All-Terrain T/As, but am EXTREMELY happy with my decision. Remember: Raised white lettering is placed on tires to keep rednecks happy. Do us all a favor all keep the white letters on the inside! smile
