ok guys i read the tire and wheel fitment guides but i just got confused...im just wanting to run 32's under my 01 when i do my pml and was wondering if they would fit since i have 16 inch rims? should i just go ahead and try to find some cheap 15's or would the 32's fit on 16's with my pml? thanks for the help im just tryin to get my 4x2 on as big of tires as i can on my small budget.

The simple answer is yes, it can work. There are some guys that have done it, usually with some plastic trimming. To really get bigger tires you will need a BL (body lift) not too expensive, search for some more info on them.

To directly answer your question about changing your rim size....
The 32"x12.5" tire doesn't change it's size if it's on a 15" or a 16" rim. a 32x12.5x16 tire is the same size as a 32x12.5x15 tire (except for the diamter of the rim). The only difference is the inner diamter of the tire where it mounts on the rim, which has no effect on tire rub issues.

Original poster:

If you already have 16" rims and a small budget, why don't you just run something along the lines of 265/75/16 tire? That particular size is very close to 32" and only requires small plastic trimming in the back of the front wheel.

yeah, 32" (or 265/75/16 or similar) is as big as you can go with only a PML without having to cut metal.

gotcha thanks very much...well i was lookin at the x today and i noticed that theres not much room between the plastic in front of the front tires, like only 4 inches or so i'd say, now im really debating on the 32's. maybe i should just run 31's. any second opinions, how much plastic trimming did you first gen guys do for 32's?

Here's the trimming I did on my '01 with 265/75R16s

I trimmed more than I needed to, so it's extrememly minimal. I think this is probably the best upgrade you can do to a stock Xterra. I'd highly recommend going with the bigger size over the 31s, and as far as I'm concerned you may as well save some money and stick with your 16" wheels and get the 265/75R16s.
