this one is to anyone who has added an amp to the factory system on the 2001 SE. I'm going to be doing this shortly but need to know if I have to pull out the factory radio to splice into the speaker outs or can I access in the back since after a brief look back there it looked a bit conplicated back there with the computer and other wires in that area. Just need to know whats the best way to go about it.

Best bet is to take it out so you can get to the wires comfortably and do a nice install. The last thing you want is loose or shady connections.

Your amp should have line-out inputs, or you'll need a line-out convertor to go in between the deck and amp.

I had a shop try to do the very same thing on my 2001 Xterra SE.I had a MTX thunder 4244(or was it 4200) 4 ch amp.The amp had high speaker level inputs and thay spent 4 hr's trying to get the alt whine (motor noise) out.Could not be done.In the end i traded the amp for a new Clarion DXZ-715 head unit.
At 50Wx4 max it's a lot louder and cleaner than the factory 6-disk unit.

i bought a Clarion 5 channel ap (APX600.5) and used the high level inputs. The people who installed it did not properlly ground one of the wires, so there was some engine noise, but I fixed that. no convertes needed that way.

Do a search for METRA in this section. I posted to wiring harnass adapters for both into-radio and into-factory. Makes the job a heluvalot cleaner.
