Thanks to our wonderful government, public tax dollars are no longer enough to pay for public access to public lands.

The Recreational Fee Demonstration Program, which passed Congress in 1996, is in effect in the Ouray area, and in order to drive Imogene Pass and Yankee Boy Basin during the week of GOX, you will need a permit.

Follow the link below and purchase a "Canyon Creek Vehicle Pass" for $15 (not the OHV pass).
http://www.publiclands.org/html/recpermits/frame_recpermits.asp?permitstate=CO

Please send your comments about this annoyance to mailto:r2_gmug_visitor_information@fs.fed.us

Not a big deal, as we (MN) have to pay $30 to drive on logging roads and the occasional slope.
I'll gladly cough up the $15. Actually, I already did. They get you for $3.95 in shipping as well. That sucks.

just a question for the procrastinators of the group. Will this permit be available in town for purchase when we arrive at gox or do we have to order it online.

As far as I can tell, it is only available online.

The forest service has not returned my email regarding the issue.

Ian-

I ordered my permit today but was curious of the areas you mention that the permit is needed to drive through. When will we be in these areas and on what runs? I know you have several types of runs set up for different levels of four wheeling and I'm wondering if this area will be passed through by everyone or just certain levels of four wheelers. More info would be great. Thanks.

Mike

Or just drop an extra $50 and get the Golden Eagle Pass. Good for National Parks, Monuments and USFS fee areas. If you spend any time in the backcountry, it is well worth it. In 2000-01, it saved me at least 50 bucks. Just got my 2001-02 pass.

It probably has to do with paying for the damage those Texans did a while back

Mike,

Imogene Pass and Yankee Boy Basin are what's covered by the pass.

The trail runs I'm leading will be driving both of them 3 times during the week.

OK Ian, thanks. Sorry if it was a stupid question but I didn't make GOX I and I've never been to the area so I couldn't be sure exactly where and what we were doing at II.

Anyway, I'll be prepared for it in case I need it. Thanks.

According to the USFS website the permits are available in Ouray at the Ouray Vistor's Center. There is also a daily pass for $5.

I verified this yesterday, but they said they were in short supply. Even the forest service center in Montrose wouldn't have enough on hand for everyone coming to GOX.

Maybe we should boycott it like the mayor of Ouray did.

Just drive away real fast. "Ummm...it was a yellow Xterra. We'll catch them in town. How many of those could there be?"

Received my pass in the mail today, man I can't wait, the pictures that have been posted of GOX last year are incredible. Unfortunately I didn't find the XOC until after the gathering

I think that with all Ian has done and the others that are helping out this is going to be fantastic. I am so looking forward to meeting the group and spending time in what looks to be four wheeling heaven for an entire week. I know some of you would argue "four wheeling heaven" with Moab in the not so distant area, but you have to remember that we travel in a cloud of dust while group wheeling here in AZ, sometimes you lose sight of the vehicle directly in front of you. A month away, woo hoo!

I, too, have received my "Yankee Boy" pass.
Where exactly are we supposed to affix the little bastard? Front window? High? Low?
Where?

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing. Didn't want to look stupid so it's put away in my center armrest storage until I either find out or get to GOX

Got my pass a couple of days ago. I just put it on the lower passenger side of the windshield. Now I am ready. Bring on GOX
