I know Stant makes one that fits the Xterra.

Search the Parts And Accesories section, there should be plenty of posts about it.

But man, why the hell would anyone steal a gas cap?

Hi,

You can get a Stant at pretty much any auto store. The one on mine works just fine and has for the last 6 months or so. I got hit about 4 times before I realized they were taking my gas!

Hey where in Burlington do you live? I am in Mount Holly.

I did not think about people stealing gas. Maybe i should get a locking cap...

Steve that's a good idea..Especially with the gas prices on the rise..

I was reading an artical and the crimes on the rise right now is people stealing gas out of vehicles and filling up at gas stations and driving off..

I put mine on (stant) the week I brought the truck home. No problems. Just make sure you click it about 4 times or you will get a check engine light (been there done that 2nd month, took forever to go out on it's own).

I have and it fits perfect.....no problems with CEL.....

Robb
I just recieved mine from the same place. Better safe than sorry. No problems as of yet.
I used to live in Burlington TWP for about 12 years I never heard of any one stealing just a gas cap. I mean, how lame is that.

I'm pretty sure the primary purpose of the locking gas cap was to protect the gas, not the cap itself.

laugh

The two main motivating issues for a locking cap were people siphoning out gas (to steal gas), and vandalising the gas (Suger or urine, etc...in tank).

laugh

Of course, with the newer OBD systems that light the Check Engine Light if the gas cap won't seal (Bad gasket, etc...)...and the new inspection emission station checks that automatically fail you if your check engine light is on....

...the theft of working caps themselves could increase....ading a third issue.

Also be fore-warned that most gas caps do not protect very well.

Many can be pushed at an angle and turned.

I did this very often on my Stant locking cap when I was too lazy to get the key from the ignition.

It is true that is it better then nothing.

Also telling people that they are vunerable to gas theft even with a locking gas cap is a service.

Since they can check it themselves, and make sure theirs can't be removed like that.

If a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, how much would you need to know to be completely safe?

I've been thinking of getting a locking cap the last few months. Especially since I always fill up with Super. $35 got me a little over 11 gallons tonight. I'm sure it will cost even more by Saturday-Sunday.
