We will have a replacement heavy duty Differential Cover out in a 3-4 weeks. The cover is the only area that's vulnerable. The outside ring will be 3/8" steel, so it will not ever peel back the way the one in the pics above did. The cover portion is 1/4" steel, so if you back into something, you will not dent the cover into the ring gear.
With this approach you also loose no ground clearance at what is already the lowest point of the vehicle.
Havent decided what to do on the non D44 axles. Probably a cap that will require some minor/quick welding. Sounds like the ideal solution!

Jim,
Just my 2 cents but, I'd rather see you develop a rear skid. Noone can deny they eat up ground clearance (about 1/4 to 1/2 inch) depending on design. But, I think it's just as difficult to deny that they better protect the diff than simple covers. Covers are great on front ends but, skids work better on the rears. And, I'm certain however you'd design it, it'd be better than what's available currently.

It's stronger than a skid plate already. You could argue that a little xtra protection "can't hurt" but it does. It eats ground clearance at the worst possible spot and protects something that doesnt break. The whole concept of a diff skid just makes absolutely no sense to me.

Hey Jim...
Just wondering if you ever decided to make a decent roof rack for the 05+ X? I saw a post from you back in May where you were soliciting ideas for a better roof rack?
BTW... I'll be ordering your rock sliders soon. One more bag of aluminum cans and I am there! Darn kids and their college expenses.

do you have to remove any of the skids for an oil change or can you get around them. I am just wondering becuase if the bolts get mashed during wheeling and I can't get them off, can i still change the oil?
