Just wondering if anyone here has made a "home made" air intake for their X. I saw a post from awhile back where the guy said he just bought the MAF adapter and a cone filter, and just hooked it to the stock hose and it worked fine. seems like a much cheaper solution to buying the Airaid or K&N kit. Any thoughts?..

One of my friends just made one that works awesome. He got the K&N off the shelf from a parts store and fabricated his own air horn that bolts where the intake does. Then just drilled a hole in the end of the filter to accept the sensor.

I'll try to get some pics and post them. (Marcus, if you read this..... hint, hint.)

AG-Bullet has one, if that is the person you are refering to, for Frontier.

I tried to lay out the steps the best I could for mine. I have changed it many times and finally have a reliable set-up that doesn't trip any codes. If I can help at all, let me know.

agbullet,
I have a question about the placement of the air temp sensor.. does it really matter where you mount it? does it make a difference that its mounted in the heat shield?

It is all subjective but I wanted the sensor to read air that was as close to what is really being pulled in as possible.

I machined an air horn and used an APC Pro Street air filter from the auto parts store. Works great and looks good. My MPG went up 1 MPG. The filter adds some intake noise but doesn't get to crazy untill you romp on it. Gets a little noisey but the improvement is WELL worth it. I'll see if I can post pictures Wednesday, with a little help from Craig. [Wave]

Here are a couple pics of Mark's (xterracal) custom intake. I'll let him answer questions or post details, but I must admit he did a VERY nice job.

Your intake looks great Mark smile
I finished mine this past week and here are some shots of it. I made it from a K&N universal filter and a Nissan adapter plate from a local parts shop. I made the heat shield from a piece of unused plastic from the console of my last vehicle. I am happy with it and I may put some aluminum piping on to replace the stock pipe eventually. The first thing I noticed was the sound. You can really hear it sucking in the air, and when you get going it gives a nice little growl. Seems like it has a bit more pep also.
