I've used the search feature.
With an automatic transmission, considering you have all ready done tires, sliders, lift and steering, which comes next gears or locking the back?
Please explain your answer. thank you

Automatics - lockers. Manuals - gears.
Automatics can crawl slow enough to make use of the lockers. Manuals need the low gears first or they will be doing a lot of clutch slipping.
I have an auto with lockers.

I am in a toss up between the gears or locker,which one first? I've noticed a HUGE loss of power in 4wd at around the 12,000 ft mark. Seems gears would help out tremendously in this area.Not to mention everywhere else. The advantage with lockers is obvious but you have to be able to have the umfff to move.

Last year near the top of Imogene I was in 4lo 1st gear and barely made it up the last two hills near the Red Mountain overlook. I thought this was odd. Maybe somthing isn't right. The X was loaded with camping gear also. hmmm....

I've had the same problem, though with my truck it seems to have some sort of high-altitude/been wheeling all day vapor lock type issues. If I stop and open the gas cap, it wooshes for about 10 minutes, and then the power seems better again. Imogene from the Telluride side is defintely one of the places I notice it. I also starting getting a gas smell from the pressure release do hicky by the right rear tire. Never been able to diagnose it. I don't know if having a gas tank skid makes the gas tank enough hotter to be an issue.

The type of trails you run will make a big difference.
Do a lot of rock crawling? Then low gears will be a BIG help but if you are running in mud or loose soils, then having the LOW bottom gear will limit your wheelspin and may not be the best choice.
At least that is my theory.....

Personally I think you should be able to tell what you need yourself.
If you don't have enough experience to know what your Xterra needs next you don't have enough experience to be getting into advanced offroading mods. Especially lockers, if your not an advanced wheeler lockers are just going to make it easier for you to break something.

If you slowed a bit and needed to downshift to 1st gear 4LO (stock, 33.53:1) you might be geared too tall, where the CALMINI gears would let you shift down to 3rd at 24.72:1.

Regarding locker VS gears - as someone said, it depends greatly on where you are wheeling.
Those of us in Dallas mostly go to Barnwell - an old iron ore stripmine area(I believe) with lots of loose sand/sandstone... traction sucks and picking the line that provides the most of it is the name of the game. Gears wouldn't help much - a locker would be TREMENDOUSLY helpful.
My understanding of the wheeling in Colorado/Utah where GOX and GONE are is that there are high altitude problems and steep grade problems, but TONS of traction on the slickrock - so lockers would be less helpful and gears would be more helpful.
... so... your call based on location and type of wheelin'. If you're just rednecking in a field (mudding), for instance, you don't need either!
