Ok, this might be a stupid question but its something I was wondering the other day. How is it you guys go offroading and ride over big holes and huge rocks and don't have need to get your wheels aligned often. I remember my dad telling me (way back before the Xterra) that if I run over too many curbs or bumps I will knock my alignment out of wack? Does father know best or does it not apply to trucks or the X?

Offroading will indeed knock your alignment off. You should think about an alignment as an ongoing thing.

I did some nasty trails since my last alignment (yesterday) and my X was pulling to the right rather severly. My dealership did the work under warranty too! (even with custom wheels, and 13K miles)

We also don't run over them fast.

Hitting a huge pothole on the highway can do a lot more damage than crawling over a rock at 2mph.

One thing that can happen is the balancing weights on the wheels could get knocked loose, or parts of the tread get altered enough to throw them out of balance.

Ian's right though, you'll do far more damage at speed than slow off-roading - but either might increase the necessity for alignments.

Borderphreak,
Do you even OFFROAD with your X? I read all this advice you give folks about off-roading and I don't even see or hear of any off-roading you have done....so do ya talk-the-talk? or walk-the-walk?

As a matter of fact, I do - and yes, amazingly, before the Xterra ever existed. I also have enough automotive knowledge and common sense. I suppose that makes me as much an expert as any of you.

I didn't realize AZ had any potholes. I haven't found them yet... Now Pittsburgh has potholes. I could lose my X in one of those!
