I need new shocks for my X, and I have heard a lot about bilstein's. What type should I get? I do not do a lot of serious off-roading or anything like that, yet. It is still a primary vehicle. Any info on the type of bilstein shock and a link where they are cheapest would be great. Also, how easy is it to install them? Any special tools? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry, also wondering if it is o.k. to do just the rear or should front and rear be done at same time?

You can change out the back and leave the front with no problems, but you'll notice more of an improvement if you change all of them out at the same time.

Try www.eshocks.com - I paid about $260 for a set of 4, and at the time I bought anything over $200 or so was free shipping. They shipped quick and at a pretty good price.

Edit - they are very easy to install. I spent about 2 hours, working slowly, to change out the whole set. The back set is easier to change than the front, but neither one should be a problem. It's easiest to take the wheel off of the front to change it, but the back you can just crawl under and change.

Should you need them, here are a few threads about how to install shocks, FYI:

I recently installed the Bilstein 5100's on my X. I replaced all four but I drove it once I replaced the rears, before I installed the fronts just to see what the difference was up to that point. WOW. The rear felt great, and the fronts felt like jello. The improvement of the ride once all four were replaced was impressive. Money well spent! $60 for the rear, $65 for the fronts because I ordered them 20% stiffer (glad I did.) Got em from SLR.

Replace the rears, but really think about investing in the front, you'll be glad you did.
