WHile driving 01 XE over some rather big rocks, I have noticed an interesting noise from the rear end...sorta Hoonka-Hoonka not loud or anything but definitely there. This is usually heard when there is articulation going on e.g., FL down, RR up, etc. Wondering if this is normal or an indication that it is time to beef up the shocks?

Hard to tell from here.

laugh

If the truck is sitting level, bounce the front (And then repeat for the back...) end up and down a few times, and let go,...if it keeps going up or down rather than just settling back to level, the shocks might be shot.

Good Luck!
