#44052 - 20/12/05 03:59 AM AUX Tranny cooler before or after radiator?

I will be towing on occasion and will add an auxillary tranny cooler. I have noticed that it takes some time for the lockup to occur in 4th when cold. Should I place the auxillary tranny cooler before or after the radiator?

My thoughts are as follows;
Before the radiator would provide the highest temp differential between the cooler and the fluid thus removing more heat. Done this way the tranny fluid will heat quicker when cold out for normal driving. Downside is that during summer towing the radiator may heat it back up to the point that the cooler did not have much effect. This method also reduced the heat load on the radiator thus cooling the engine better?

After the radiator would allow the coolest fluid to get the tranny. Might take a long time to get the tranny up to temp in the winter and extend the time that it takes for 4th gear converter to lockup. Possible overcooling?

I suppose this has been hashed over before but I did not find it discussed.

2000 V6 towing about 3500 in summer, outside temps may be aorund 95. In winter mornings as cold as 15 to 30 generally.

I suspect for my needs that I should install after the radiator and perhaps place a cover over the cooler in the winter. Ideally a temp gauge would let me know what is going on. Any links or expierence with a good temp gauge?

Which line is the goesinto for the the tranny and which is the goesouta?

All depends on the climate where you live. If you live in a cold climate then the aux cooler should be installed before the rad. In warm climate install it after the rad, this way it will be at its coldest before it enters the tranny. In cold climates you dont want the trans oil too cold as it enters the tranny. Too cold is no good either. Im in NY and I installed a cooler on my girlfriends Rodeo before the main radiator.
