im kinda new to the whole xterra thing...and i was wondering what kind of axles they have and how strong they are

Independant in front solid in the rear. They're pretty strong, I've never heard of an axle break, usually the hubs go first.

The rear diff has been compared to a Ford 9" in strength.

I personally have put the Xterra through it's paces and never had anything break.

out of curiosity, since we're talking about axles and such...
i'm heard terms like dana 44, and dana 60...what exactly do those numbers refer to?
and how would it apply to the xterra? because i typically only hear about danas on domestic trucks/suvs, so i figure it's just a matter of difference in terminology.
so what would the xterra's axle/diff be equivalent to?

Generally speaking, the larger the number, the stronger the diff. The X rear diff is generally regarded as stronger than a Dana44 (which is the most common of the medium-duty Dana series that are really worth their salt), and on-par with the Ford 9" (though we don't have the rear pinion support that makes it so famous).
