So it was raining like a mother today in new york.
My wife and I are driving along, and she says the roof is leaking on her.
I pull over, and see its not the roof, but on the front passenger side, right above the seam, over the hand hold, about two inches past, there was a nice drip, drip , drip going. And the headliner(or whatever you want to call it) was dark and wet with water,
I touched it and water came out of it like a sponge. When I check in the mornign it will probably be water stained.
Have an appointment of wednesday with dealership anyway, for an inspection, oil change, and check out those brakes that bind when wet(I previously posted about it).
Anything I should tell the service rep, other then what I am saying here?
What possible causes on this?

Much regards

Sounds like the roof rack mounts are leaking.

cool There are four (4) torx screws at the front/base of the rack (just above the windshield)- these are notorious for screwing up-

--I noticed these, when I first got my X (Dec. '05),water can SIT in it, untill it evaporates, so I put silicone around each one and covered each Bowl, with Black electrical tape (matches rack box color) and I've had no leaks--

--I'm afraid it's to late for yours, you might try my fixum, after the dealer fix's it--

Okay, I checked for water staining in the light this morning, and it seems to be okay. I guess no acid in the rain.
Next, I tool out the wrench, to check the roof rack mounts. Now heres where I come into a problem I think.
Are the suppossed to tighten up, because everyone of them, just seems to turn around and around, without tightening. However the rack does seem secure if I pull on it?
Going to dealership tomorrow, Is this normal?

cool Well, using a #10 TORX socket, or the #10 torx screwdriver supplied with the X, they should all be tight--

--NOT VERY TIGHT, just hand tight, otherwise, the captive NUTS inside the X roof, have BUSTED loose--

--Have your dealer checkitout--good luck

So I went to my appointment with dealer to have oil change, brakes looked at, and water leakage looked at.
As far as brakes, they said they cleaned and adjusted them and everything should be okay.
I happen to see the service manager and told him the problem with leaking and the one screw, I looked at, which was completely stripped.
We went to one on the floor to compare and they were all tight.
Anyway, a few hours later, the service manager brings me to the lift, and says they wont fix the roof rack under warranty. I ask why.
Every screw(bolt) on the passenger side and the front, was completely stripped.
I told him, up until yesterday, I never even looked at them, and except for the one screw, that I immediately saw was stripped, I have never touched any of them. (literally)
I said, I am an intelligent person, if I stripped one screw, why would I go ahead and strip ten more or so. Do you see the logic. He agreed with me, but told me he doesnt know what people do, and logic always doesnt mean anything.
I asked if the rack was in danger of coming off, especially on the hiway. He said no.
Very upset at this point. I called nissan in california and have a file number on this, and they said someone(some regional guy) would call me back the next day.
Any guesses on if this is the way it was from day one, and I never realized it?
I never hit anything with rack. He says there are scratches on the screws, which proves I messed with them.
I said, I never ever touched them, unless loading something up on roof and maybee marring it, that way. And I am talking about light stuff. Sleeping bags, luggage, a piece or two from ikea. Nothing demanding.
Any suggestions or comments.?

Much regards

cool This problem, is one that Nissan has had trouble with, since the Xterra came out 9 yrs ago--

--You would think, that they would have slowly coerrected it, after a No. of complaints--Evidentaly not--

--If you had to pay for the repair, it would be expensive and then who knows how long the captive nuts would last then ??

--All I can say is stick to your guns and make a total PITA of yourself, even Talk to a lawyer (friend) cost/cost??--

--You can fixit yourself, if you have to, but you'll have to be able to take the headliner partially down, tighten the screws (2-man job)and reinstall correctly--very tough job and I would be a bit PRESENT with the Dealer-main man--good luck--JIMBO

Thanks and a few questions

1) Is there any documentation or writings anywhere about this problem, with which I can build a case on?

2) I had a regional specialist(from nissan) call me today, and basically tell me the same thing the service manager told me. He had just gotten off with the service manager.
He said he will discuss it with his managers and get back to me.
He suggested I go from dealer to dealer, until I can find one that will repair it under warranty.
I told him, I dont do things that way, and I expect nissan to make good on this, or otherwise I will have to go to alternate means.
Is this the norm for Nissan. I know its not that way for my acura or toyotas.
Any other things I should be doing?
He said I admitted to turning one of the bolts. I said I put the wrench in it and it was already stripped, since It did nothing but spin. But reasonable speaking, do you think I did that to five or six others as well. Am I stupid??

MUch regards

The air dam was not bolted through the roof in model years 2000 through 2004.
If you wanted, you could unbolt the four hex screws securing the air dam to the rack, and remove the dam and store it in your garage -- and I did.

Nissan redesigned the way the air dam mounts on the roof for 2005 MY.

I wish you could remove the air dam for the 2005+ models.

So nissan calls me up two days ago, and reiterates what the service manager says, and says that they wont honor it under warranty.
He says I should go from dealer to dealer, to see if anyone else will do it, and claim warranty.
I tell him, thats not my style and I shouldnt have to be wasting days and miles doing this.
He says what do I want.? I say to authorize the repair on it.
He says no, but he will talk with his bosses and call me up.
Yesterday morning, I went to my friends 06 xterra, and ask him if I can see his roof rack bolts.
We take out the torx screwdriver, and the bolts feel tight as a vise and cannot be moved.
It seems like it would be physically impossible(at least with manual torx screwdriver) to overtighten to get them to strip, and especially to do seven or eight of them(and for what purspose?)
I call the regional specialist back, he doesnt answer, but I leave a message on his answering machine, on the problems one would have trying to strip all those bolts(by accident).
Havent hear back, but I am getting plenty pissed, and will not let this fly.

Much regards

Have you had an accident or any paint work done? I had somebody pop me in the right rear which required that the body shop remove the roof rack to blend the paint onto the replacement panel. When they put the rack back on, they stripped a bunch of the nut inserts and I had water leakage up by my windshield. (Yes, water leakage at the front after a rear-end repair, fabulous.)

I took it back to the repair shop and they dropped the headliner and reinstalled most (or all) of the nuts and I think they put some rubber goop around them to prevent water leakage again.

Anyway, I hate the design of those crimp-on nut inserts - just a retarded idea. Seems a lot better to tack-weld a permanent nut onto the underside of the roof sheet-metal, but I'm no automotive guy...

The quote from the regional manager is laughable though! Basically, he wants you to find a branch manager that will cave to your request so he won't have to deal with it. What a terd.

Thanks for responding. Over 10,000 miles and in excellent, almost showroom new condition.
No bangs, scratches, dents, spills, spains, except for the water spots on headliner, and a bit of a rub spot on the bottom of rear hatch.

Much regards

I had to deal with Nissan over the lock cylinder in the rear hatch. Lock never worked with the key, and I had to fight with Nissan to get them to spend the extra $30 to pin the lock to my key instead of having a different key for the hatch. Nissan claimed it couldn't be done, so check all the options before bashing the regional rep, give the options to him/her and let the beating begin. I got what I wanted, but it took several phone calls.

Hello,
Sadly you have a big problem. I had the same and posted extensive work arround here.( I don't see it any longer) I am inteligent too and understant very well the nature of the problem.
1. All this is absolutely not related to your intervention.
2. The bolts that look scratched are from rust free alloy and they don't hold the paint well. It seems to be scratches from tools, but it is not.
3. The nuts are not stripped. Tjhose are bishings spinning in the holes of the roof metal. The access from insife the car is limited even if you droped the seeling. Some of the nuts are under the roof reinforcing braces. This is not going to help.
4. I my oppinion the best way to fix that is the following:
- The plastic supports for the roof rack components shold be CUT very carefuly and removed. When the mounting bolts are exposed they can be removed when holding the spinning heds of the bushings with wisegrips. There are many small procedure details here, but I have no time to write them down now. Let me know if interested. I have pictures too. Any way the problem is fixable.
- Talk to the dealer service that you will care for the roof itself, but they have to supply new roof rack components under warranty. In my case the dealer sent me to body shop and they cut the plastics UNDR MY SUPERVISION. Then they gave me the new roof parts and I installed them with the agreement that they will be not covered under warranty in the future.

Now my problem is fixed and I like this car very much. Again there are many fine details that if you don't follow you can permanently damage the roof. For now Don't try to undo any bolts anymore, because it will never work.

Regards

Larry
