Patiently waiting. I think Calmini will have something out in the next 8 - 10 weeks. All in due time...

We just got back from running Steel Bender. Quite a breeze in the park in my old 01 with 32s and 3" lift (oh, and sliders)... not so easy with a stocker and 33s. I think the trail may be a little more deteriorated from the rains this year. Can't wait to get that extra 5" of clearance.

There are many reasons why the lift is not ready... in due time. While I don't have the lift I am getting used to the way this X handles with all the extra goodies! wink

How can you fit a tow hitch w/that spare will it only fit once you get the lift or will you have to take the spare off? I want the same size tires once I get my 05 x and was curious.

While the OEM tow hitch is on the spare (285) is either up top in the basket or in the rear cargo area. I have a rear tire carrier on order from Calmini that will hold the spare and be my towing.

Have you noticed any change in mpg since you put the tires on? I was also curious on what mpg you were averaging before putting the tires on?

fastdrmr,

Thanks for the data. I'll go this route when it's time for new tires.

Can you confirm the rub location is where the outer corner of the front tires hits the skirt (front or rear of the wheelwell?) when at full lock?

Does it hit in any other circumstance?

thanks!
Zak

Front wheels rub on the skirt at the rear side, toward the inside. It is not under full turn, but more like 60% turn. Eventually the skirt will wear through but not a big deal. There is enough play in the skirt so the tires are not being compromised.

I will photograph it and post... now that there is a hole.

I just put this size on and had the same slight rub on the front fender plastic. Ten minutes with a heat gun and no more rub. Just soften it up and push the plastic in a bit. Hold it in till it cools and you are done. [Smoking]

I may also get the 285/75R/16 BFG T/A KOs for my '06 (currently on order; should be here in another week or 2). Does anyone know for sure if a 285/75R/16 spare will fit in the hold with the OEM tow package? From looking at the spare tire pics posted here earlier, it looks pretty unlikely that it would fit w/ towing apparatus.

If I stay with the smaller diameter stock spare tire (265/75R/16), would I be able to safely use it as a spare without causing damage if I stayed in 2WD mode? It is my understanding that I could cause damage if mismatched diameter tires are used in 4WD mode.

I am 99.999% sure it won't fit with the trailer hitch. The 32" is tight with the hitch.

Not to Hijack this thread but I would love to go with the BFG KO's and am not planning to raise my truck. Would either the 265/75-16 or 25/70-16 fit the wheel wells without rubbing and still be bigger than stock?

265/75R16 is the stock tire size for the OR. so it's alittle larger than what you came with, but will fit fine with no issues at all. and pretty much all the different trim levels are the same, especially with regard to the wheel areas. only accessories differentiate the trims.

Thanks for the info, but one more question. I'm not near my truck to check but tirerack says that the OE tire is 265/70-16 for my S, and I apologize for my very little tire knowledge but what is the difference if I switched to the 265/75R16? Wider or taller etc?

I have 265/75/R16's on mine. They are a tad wider and measure 31.6" tall.

actually, it should be the same(or very similar width) while being alittle taller. 265 is the width, while the 75% means more sidewall, and therefore alittle more height. in the BFG AT, the 265/70 are a 30.8" tire, while the 265/75 is 31.8" tall.

now as for the spare, that's what i'm doing right now..i have the 32" stock spare.

i'm pretty sure that the 33" won't fit underneath with my hidden-hitch. i'm pretty sure fastdrmr posted somewhere that he had put his full-size spare somewhere else once he got a hitch.

from what I can remember from my jeepin days, all that really happens with a smaller diameter spare, is that it's like you are turning all the time, and your differential is working harder. so no, you probably won't damage your drive train in either 2wd or 4wd mode. but definetely you'll want to get it fixed or repaired soon.

and i've been told several times that if you have a smaller spare, you should put it on your non-drive wheels if possible.

of course, just upgrading the rugged trails or long trails to ATs will help you out immensely in this respect, as they are like a gazillion times less likely to go flat(that's scientific fact!) really though, my buddy with a 05 tacoma has had to replace two of his rugged trails from on-road debris...and got pissed when he saw my tires. jealous

265/70R16 = 30.6x10.4x16
265/75R16 = 31.6x10.4x16

So they are the same width and the 265/75R16 is one inch taller.

Excellent info lj1983. I'm definitely going to upgrade to the BFG T/A KOs, just have to decide whether I want to stay with stock size or move up to 285/75R/16 (almost 33"). I'm definitely leaning toward the 33" right now. If I go with 33s I'll just have to carry the smaller dia. stock spare as well since I don't want to get a rear tire carrier.

I would like to get new alloy wheels too but there isn't much, if anything to choose from yet.

What if one chooses not to remove the splash guards from his '05/'06, will the 285/75/R16 BFG A/T KO's rub anymore than without them? I personally like the look and functionality of the splash guards.

Also, it was asked earlier, but missed. How did the 285's affect your MPG? thanks

Just to clarify...33's fit on a stock '05+, the soft skirt plastic is all you move a bit to clear.

As for spares smaller than the rest...bad idea if you off road...as in if the terrain popped your GOOD tires, imagine what it will do to your wimpy spare?

And, if you needed 4wd and 4 big tires to get in, will you be able to make it out on 3 good ones, etc?

The LSD's will send the torque to the smaller tire, as that tire will be spinning the fastest...and your GOOD tire will be along for the ride.

The Or's have less problem, as the stockers are 32" anyway, so the size difference is minimal, especially when aired down....but the locker will be working the axle sideways as it twists it towards the smaller tire, etc.

frown

If you have an '05+, and are getting new tires, get the 33's. If you have a hitch in the way, deflate the spare until it fits, and bring a compressor to inflate it enough to use later (On the trails, you are aired down anyway...) laugh

Just get 5 tires, and sell the virgin spare for maximum ROI.

laugh

You could probaly run 305/70/16's instead of 285/75/16's, and get the extra traction and floatation...and just adjust the turn stops a bit to avoid rub on full lock.

The 305/70/16's are slightly wider treaded, and slightly taller, than an average 33x12.5/15....with a slightly narrower section width for better handling and more clearance when turning.

laugh

BTW - If you off road with splash guards, they get ripped off, detracting from their looks and functionality....and their resale value if not taken off before wrecking them.

(Same goes for the aluminum steps...they're lovely and all that, but, they get ruined off road, and if you take them off before wrecking them, you can sell them, and buy real sliders that protect the truck.)

laugh

I can't tell you how many newbies I've seen tear off the guards and bend/dent the steps...and then wish they'd left them home for e-bay, etc.

i've seen you post the 305s on here several times, i'm wondering if anyone's put them on and posted pics? i know we have at least 1 05 that used them.

and i remember seeing somewhere a 05 pathy with the 305s in BFG MT...freakin badass, but he had to use a sawzall.

it's not full lock that it's rubbing, and the place where the 285s rub, a larger tire might actually run into sheet metal, rather than plastic (might, not really sure). it's hard to describe or show...but the fender doesn't come straight down, it actually curves in alittle at the bottom, and that's what i'm more worried about.

as for the spare. yes your right, in the ideal world 5 full size tires is best. I haven't switched out one of my tires to see if it'll stuff up underneath, i need to get on that. just looking at it, seemed too tight with the 32s, but i forgot how much the tires will "shrink" without all the air.

i don't think it'll affect the LSD all that much, wheelspin has got to be pretty significant before it kicks in, and 1" dia will play less to this than actual traction circumstances. but yes, you are defientely hobbled as compared to before. there aren't as many really long trails out here, and if you can't repair it, then that's what the other guys out there with you are for. again, i don't think it'll damage anything, but defenetely take it as 'hobbling' home to get it repaired.

when i get a chance i'll switch out one of my tires and see if it'll stuff. if it won't, then i'll probably end up changing my spare for something alittle better. someday, after all the underbody armor, a tire carrier of some sort is definetely in order.

oh yeah, as for mileage, it's gone to shit with winter mixes...

but before that i was coming out with about the same as before the tire swap. they're definetely heavier tires, but like TJ has said elsewhere, they change the final drive ratio, making it alittle higher-creating less rpms for the same speed. during the summer i was coming out with ~19 combined MPG

How exactly does the 33" spare interfere with the tow receiver? I have neither yet, but plan on getting the 33" tires (with spare) before the tow package.....and just want to make sure that I will be able to deflate the 33" spare enough in order to install the receiver. Is this viable?

The mounts to the frame for the hitch box out a smaller area for the spare to fit into under there.

The OR comes with 32's, so they should be fine for the spare, as they come with that size there already. (All that year X's are the same hitch, etc...)

33's need one more inch overall, or a half in in each direction, to fit.

Deflating the 33 would allow it to loose several inches of diameter if need be, way smaller than the inflated 32's....so should be pretty easy to merely drain 10 psi or so, and cram it up there.

That might even be a reasonable psi for offroad work, so it may even be convenient.

I'm going to have to get under someone's '05 and see why my '01 can fit larger tires than they can, and that's with wells several inches smaller across.

I'm thinking the only thing in the way as the fatter tire travels up is the soft plastic skirt, not sheet metal...and we only need about 10 mm to get room inboard of a 285 to where a 305 would need to clear.

If there's sheet metal sticking out w/in that difference, it can probably be BFH'd to clear the contact point, etc.
