I finally got my ARB finished up. This Durabak stuff is like iron once it's cured. I included a pic of the rear for grins. The yellow seemed a bit more difficult to apply than the black for some reason; a bit more gummy, even when thinned with xylene. Didn't expect it, but I'm getting lots of comments on the road. Winch should be here in a couple of days. After that; a new wheel for the spare/rock sliderz/skid plates and that should do it for the high dollar mods (for now anyway).

Very, VERY nice rig!! I think I like the rear tire setup a lot more than I didn when all I had was a "mental" picture. Where'd you find it?? How many greenbacks did it run out of your wallet??

Wow, I'm surprised, that looks pretty good.

My observations:

Why didn't you paint the front grill?
Ditch the step rails!
You ARB looks misaligned a bit.
Did you yank the wheel well plastic trim?

Congrats, you certainly have a one-of-a-kind X now!

Front Grille: thought of it -- ran out of yellow Durabak

Step rails go when the sliderz arrive (the kids need something to climb into the truck)

Alignment: gotta slot the rear holes a bit more; will do when I put the winch in

Fender trim: not enough yellow Durabak, at $130 a gallon, I don't think it looks too bad without 'em. Maybe in the future.

Thanks

Hey MC. Nice looking ride brotha. A lot better than the BFG lime green one.
Are you gonna do anything with the step railing and the roof rack? Just wondering.

Rails will be donated to charity. I'm working a deal on a used Conferr rack, at 4x5, it might be a bit large for my taste. If the guy drops his price any lower, it will be hard to resist (it has the tools mounts and Hi-lift mount and I can get it right now for $140!) At any rate, I'd probably match the silver, or if I end up buying another gallon of yellow, I might just dip everything in the 'ol mustard.

A couple more pics:
To head the question off at the pass -- yes, you can see the license plate from directly behind the truck; very visible at police car level.

Very nice, guess you ran out of yellow for the front D rings? Can't loose that X in a parking lot.

Ah, that would do it!

>Step rails go when the sliderz arrive (the >kids need something to climb into the truck)

Understood.

Cool, good luck getting it to fit just right, it will, it just takes time and patience.

>Fender trim: not enough yellow Durabak, at >$130 a gallon, I don't think it looks too >bad without 'em. Maybe in the future.

So you only bought one gallon I hope? From looking at the other pics, Durabek is like Herculiner ... I didn't realize it had that kind of finish to it.

Good luck with it!

Looks good..especially the KMA! Mine should be sent (hopefully) in the next couple of days. It's hard to tell from the photos what kind of texture the durabak has but if it's anything like herculiner, good luck washing it =) .. I put black herculiner on my MAXC rock sliderz and there really isn't a way to get all the dirt out of the texture (unless you use a tooth brush). My solution is to spray Armor All tire foam on them to get them black again.... of course that is a rare circumstance because my truck is dirty more than it is clean.

Maybe a little silicone spray before I hit the woods? The stuff is supposed to be impervious to harsh chemicals, so I don't think it could hurt. Simply hose her down and maybe a little scrub brush work at the car wash. I'll let you know how that works.

In the spirit of the famous wine maker ... I will thrash no truck until it's time. I mentioned elsewhere, I learned that lesson the hard way when I popped a rear diff on my Jeep, unbeknownst to me. In the process, the diff oil trailed out behind me and the ring and pinion were subsequently "welded" together. Therefore, this truck sees no real hard duty until it gets full underbody armor and a winch. I'm following the "right tool for the job" addage. Gimme a break, I've only had it about a month. Jeeezz.

Looks good clean…nice application What do you use to paint / mix with?

Materials appear to be a superior to herculiner & closer to Rhino lining like I have on my boulder bars.

Maintaining that surface and cleaning could prove to be a chore like he said. Spray cans of silicon are inexpensive & effective

The stock plastic molding pieces are inexpensive and actually hide marks rather well. I'm really curious to see how scratch resistance this surface is? I would find out real quick on the tight trails and rocky terrain that I run.

A lighted license plate bracket attachment would be something I would add to the KMA for my state, CA.

All the yellow will get you notice… insects may like to follow the MC.

Getting it dirty shouldn't consitute "heavy duty." much fun can be had without the plates or winch. if i recall correctly only about 12 people on this board have skid plates, maybe 20 or so have some form of rock sliders, and less than 10 have winches. and a lot of people are out having fun off-road in their X. so "need" is relative.

I just find it odd that after all these mods you aren't litterlly vibrating to get out on the trail and see what it can do. heck after i simply removed my sway bars and added the ranchos, i had to take a half day on that friday so i could go see what difference the mod made.

I have to agree with Xtolbox on the plastic fender flares. time will tell if that stuff stays on there. did you atleast really roughen up the plastic with burnishing wheels or something so the paint had something to bite on?

XTERRA4EVER: Nope, not leased; it's mine to do with as I please.

Xtoolbox: I mixed the stuff real good with an electric drill attachment (often). It was applied with a 4" stippled roller (they provide 2 with the gallon).
As far as the plastic corners go, I think I'll get another quart of yellow to have laying around. If it gets gouged up, I'll just slop some more Durabak on. That's the beauty of this stuff: if it's lumpy, bumpy, sloppy -- so what ... that's what it's supposed to look like. If they end up looking really crappy, I'll buy some new grey corners, no big deal. I scored the corners deeply
in a cross hatch pattern before I put the stuff on; it should stay adhered fairly well.
License plate light: Already done/wired/working; if you look real close near the top left corner of the "R" in my plate number, you can see the bottom right corner of the light (bolted to the top of the tag frame).

Synchro: Have no fear, my X will not be/is not a poseur truck or show rig. I can assure you, it will be put through it's paces. I'm just building it first. I was always one of those kids who liked to get a sandcastle just right before I stomped the crap out of it -- I guess that behavior holds true to this day.

I was thinking about painting my ARB prior to installing it but did not know if it would be too much or not.

Well I now have my answer:
Nope!

I think that I will bang up my ARB a bit but know that I can always restore it to a better color (Yellow )

You might also want to check out http://www.masterpull.com/ as they have Yellow Winch Line.

Looks great!

I think I agree with swampwrecker. No offense and I love the mods you've chosen, but as an artist, there's way too much yellow on the bottom for me. But don't let me discourage you; we're all about being unique, so more power to you.

None taken, I like it and that's what counts. BTW my wife said the same thing! Ha. I've done lots of award-winning Harley customizing, and believe me, yellow was at the bottom of my color choice list, but I think it goes so good on the X. It'll look better muddy.

Sorry, that line just popped in my head when I saw your pictures. I would like it much better if you hadn't painted the plastic pieces. The contrast between the yellow and the grey is very handsome. I think there is way too much yellow for my taste.
