Actually you didn't quite give us anythign that would let us determine the MPG. You got 300 miles before the refill light came on I am surmising and I think thats not bad. Probably in the range of 18-19mpg.... that is IF your light goes on after using like 16 of the 19 gallons of fuel in your tank... record how much gas you filled up to get a the MPG.

After 8000 miles, 2 oil changes, the second one going to Mobil 1, I have gained maybe 2.5 MPG's.

I have given up on trying to get the miles up by being easy on the pedal and have joined the ranks of those who just accept the fact that the X sucks up gas like a chiken shits.

That's alot and all the time! [Laughing]

Still beats driving an Exploder though.

True, I didn't give a lot of detail - sorry! I've had to refil once already after a couple hundred miles (216 to be exact), and was curious if that's standard during the break in period. I am sure that it gets slightly better over time, however being new w/the X i thought I'd ask smile

thx!

I have had my X since December 31st. I keep extremely meticulous records of my gas mileage. It does get slightly better as time goes on, however I have noticed a slight decline in my average mpg since it hit triple digit temperatures around here. I believe that may attribute for some of it. By March my average had gone up by a whole mpg. It slowly increased from there about another .4 mpg until it got really hot.

ok, wow... I suppose I'm getting lucky (and won't complain) haha I'm now getting ~260 miles per tank... I still have around 3 gallons of gas left (based on a 20 gal tank, and it taking 17 gals to fill upt he tank), so it makes me wonder how much farther I can push it hehehe

Still missing the diesel VW (~450-500 mpt)... :p

Don't forget 4x2's will get slightly better milage than a 4x4 wink

You're not necessarily that lucky apocrates. As mentioned, 4x2's should get slightly better mpg than 4x4's. Here's what my records show since I have owned my X. Every tank is included in these averages including 100+ weather tanks and off-road tanks. I take great care to be consistent in how I fill my tank (i.e. when the handle clicks off, I never add a smidge more). I keep all of my gas receipts that give gallon amounts to three decimals and I use the trip odometer which reads to one decimal. Excel keeps track of the rest. I usually fill up shortly after the light comes on too.

Average MPG: 15.46
Average range: 256 miles
Average Gallons added: 16.52

Very close to what Nissan claims, huh.

This also brings up something interesting. You want to know how far you can push it before filling up? Well our tanks are what, 19.4 gallons? If the light comes on when there is approximately 19.4-16.52=2.88 gallons left, and the average is 15.46 MPG, then you should have about 2.88*15.46= 44.5 miles left when the light comes on. Let’s round it down to 35 to be safe though.

300mi per gallon seems good to me!

You're kidding right? THat's like 9 MPG! Even with an SC that's horrible! I get 160 miles on half a tank and I drive pretty aggressively (but no SC on mine of course).

Posted this in General also, but figure it will fit here:

I've only had to fill up two times so far... both times my light came on around 280 miles. When I filled up the tank would only take about 16 gallons, so I figure that is leaving almost 3 1/2 gallons. I also figure I'm getting about 17.5 mpg, which isn't great, but also not too bad considering most of my trips are short jaunts with multiple stops

I also keep very meticulous records. In doing so you can sometimes spot problems when your gas mileage drops considerably over a couple of tanks. My numbers are:

17.88 MPG
303.8 miles a tanks
16.9 Gallons added

It doesn't quite add up with those numbers because of the rounding, but the MPG's are correct, and the others I went back and figured after excel rounded them. I've got 13415 miles on my X now, so I've got an accurate reading of what my X will do for quite some time.

Here's another meticulous summary of MPG for the last year for my X.
Averaging really doesn't do it for me due to having hot summers and cold winters so I'll just post the high and lows:
During the summer months when the temp is above 65F, I tend to get pretty much 18-18.5 MPG.
During the past winter where we had a ton of snow (yay!)and temperatures in the 10-20F and a whole lot of 4x4, I pretty much got 14 MPG.
Driving wise I try to behave but sometimes just can't do it ! [Smoking]

Approaching 1000 miles and since I've been tracking the MPG I'm getting 17.0 17.4 18.5. This is combined HW/CTY.
I confess to lurking and would like to complement the forums for great tips and ideas.
Thanks!

Just rolled over 8500 miles since March. I have a 40 mile commute and have been keeping track since we brought it home.My drive takes me up and down several grades and runs from 4000 to 6000Ft. I haven't noticed much difference from break in to this point, depends mostly on how I drive. If I flog the life out of it when I'm late at 80mph I get 15, if I'm not flogging it I get 17 to 18 at 60 to 65 mph. On a long trip on the interstate the best I've squeeked out has been 19. The faster you go, the worse it gets. When I tow our 13ft. Burro trailer loaded with stuff in a headwind I've seen 13mpg. I can live with all these numbers.

Hello all,
I'll go out on a limb and say I'm a maintenance\records freak myself. I do the computation the old fashioned way. Reset Tripometer and fill tank until Gas pump stops pumping. Drive around until I want or need more gas. Fill tank again until pump stops pumping. Take total miles driven on Tripmeter and divide that by total gallons poured into tank. Whaa Laa!! I average through 16 weeks of discribed procedures 16.43 MPG. Not bad considering.

Got my X the first of July ('03, 4X4, 3.3L V-6). Currently have about 2400 miles on it so far. Haven't kept great records, but mine is averaging around 17MPG in mostly town driving with some highway. My old truck ('00 Frontier Crew Cab, 3.3L V6, 2X4) ran about the same going up to about 20MPG on the highway. I agree, and noticed the same with my Frontier, that the mileage will go up some after the first oil change. So I expect mine to go up slightly in a couple of months. I'll try to report back after my first oil change and I find out if it did.

BTW - With the way the 4X4 system works, as long as you keep it out of 4WD and keep the XFer case unlocked, why should the mileage be lower than a 2X4? Technically, aren't the same at this point?

Someone mentioned using Mobil 1. What does this do to the warranty? How did it effect your mileage?

I had my X since Mar. '02 and have been tracking the mileage since. It is a '02 4x4 SE.

My X has 21,233 miles and total MPG of 14.57.

Before I put in a drop in K&N the MPG was 14.05 with 4,402 miles. Since then the total miles are 17,036 and getting a total MPG of 14.70.

I finally went to Mobil 1 in June and since then I have driven 2,869.7 miles and the MPG for that is 14.93.

Mostly a 20 mile each way commute to Miami. Hope this helps.

The 4x4 probably weighs a bit more then the 4x2 - I don't have the GVW of the 4x2 X to compare, but I'm sure the 4x4's a bit heavier, could account for extra gas usage.

I personally still think it uses too much gas in comparison to other vehicles that are heavier with bigger engines, regardless of 4x4 or 4x2 weight.

But, I knew it's lack of mpg when I bought mine so no real biggy. I have experienced a bigger increase in mileage by changing to Bosch oil filters though, in both my Suv's.

The X was averaging 15mpg on short highway travels, no real city driving, now gets close to 16mpg.

My other truck is heavier then the X, but is a 4x2 and was getting 22-24mpg highway, and 21-22 city, now averaging 24-26mpg highway and 23 city.

I don't use Synthetic in either vehicle, rather Havoline 10w-30

I assumed someone would bring up the weight differences so I went out and looked. For an '03 SE with automatic they are:

4X2 3857 lbs
4X4 4156 lbs

So the difference is right at 300 lbs, or about 7.5%. And the difference of 5% gas mileage (20mpg vs 19mpg) could easily just be due to the weight difference. The numbers seem to show it now that we look at it.
