Let me preface this by saying I'm a complete dork with doing my own stuff on my vehicles. If I can't do it with a hammer, I probably can't do it

That said, is there a way to switch the 2 power outlets on the front console so the cigarette lighter outlet stays on all the time, and the one below that to the right goes off when the ignition goes off? Right now, they're wired the other way.

I'm going to install the Nokia car kit for the 8260 cell phone, and the part that goes into the power outlet is too big to go into the cigarette lighter, so I need to use the other power outlet. But, the unit consumes power even when the phone isn't plugged in, so I want to make sure the outlet cuts off with the ignition.

Is this an easy mod that I can do myself?

In a stock 2000 all of the outlets turned off with the ignition. Some of us modified our 2000s to do exactly what your X does.

The mod may be a simple as swapping the connectors at the rear of the 2 sockets, assuming they reach and that they are the same. It's a simpler approach that ripping into the wiring harness.

I made the alway on mod on my 2000, but also played with the wires to the outlets for my map light. The wires should be long enough to swap, can't remember if the connectors are the same though.

Is it easy enough to get inside the dash to look around to see if I can swap them? Any pointers are appreciated.

Why don't you just hardwire your Nokia car kit? That way you have access to the cig lighter and aux outlet. I am going to hardwire a 300W power inverter and do a custome install (the one that is floating around on this board) in the near future. That way when I am wheeling on a hot summer day I can blend up some frozen drinks.

Just take a 4 gauge lead off the battery and run it thru the firewall, remember to install the proper fuses and distributer blocks, or you might have a car-b-que. This will also give you power for amps or anything else you might need to juice up in your X.

A custom car audio shop will have all the power and ground wire you need and plenty of 24K-gold fuses and blocks, plus they look real nice!

While that sounds like a good idea, it also sounds like I can't do it with a hammer.

XCanuk emailed me a diagram of how to pull apart that part of the dash, so I'll give that a shot this weekend.

Thanks, XCanuk!
