Hey guys, stupid question really...I just bought a hack-saw. I have never used one before. I would like to saw the end of some U-Bolts I got to attach my KargoMaster to the roof rack. What is the easiest way to secure the U-Bolt while I cut the end? I don't have a black and decker workbench. Should I buy one? Any other options?

How about a vise? Or if your a cheap redneck you could use a block of wood or concrete and your foot. Or just mount if and then cut them down if you have access to the end you desire to cut.

The easiest way ( lacking a vise ) is to rebolt to to something else ( stop sign pole ) and cut. Just have the blade cut into the thread valley. Hint.. you can cross cut one of the threads making putting on the nut difficult, put the nut on first, cut the bolt/thread, then take off the nut.

Or forget the U-bolts and use horizontal Might Mounts to attach the KM to the stock rack - much easier to do, simpler to remove, and sturdy as hell.

I won't say a word... promise...

Take the hacksaw back and buy a Dremel and some cut-off wheels. Much easier and faster.

Ok it's confession time. When I came to the US and had to do my laundry, I went down to the dorm's basement and saw all these machines. Since all the european washing machines are front-loading, I mistook the dryer for one and put all my laundry and detergent in the dryer. I didn't even realize it until I starting wearing the cloth and they all had some particles of crystalized soap in the fabric... :rolleyes:

A Dremel with cutoff wheels is a toy. It's like giving away the razor and selling the blades, cuz you'll be forever buying more cutoff wheels. They're so thin and fragile, and take a good amount of time to cut something. Yeah, they're great for models and trimming finishing nails, but...

A hacksaw is cool, you might want to get a diamond dusted blade, or get a Makita 4" grinder that you can attach a REAL cutoff wheel to.
