Does anyone know how to remove the two cable linkages from the back of the A/C head unit for a 2003 Xterra?

I've gotten the whole thing out, but the cable linkage for temperature and vent position seem to be assembled in a way that they don't come off the head unit. Perhaps I have to undo them from the other end, but I certainly hope not.

I've made a couple of posts in the Electronics forum regarding the issue. Basically Nissan has now admitted that a batch of 2003 Xterras have AC systems where the compressor runs all the time. They don't consider this to be incorrect and won't fix it. A new head unit costs approx $150 and I've isolated that as the issue. I've already told the general manager of the dealership I purchased at that he is losing a 2 time customer over $150.

I want to get the issue fixed and then pursue getting it paid for by Nissan. I just can't figure out how to get those two cables loose.
