Almost 160000. Trans starting to show her age, have passenger side valve cover leak and suspension is worn out.

Looking forward to possibly buying a new one next summer.

Mine's an '03 and sits right now at about 52,500 and change. Yeah, I only live 3 miles from work. Most of the "other" driving is done in my wife's car too...

Thinking about the timing belt next spring, JIK.

My 2000 has 93,500 miles on it so far. Still running great. Most I had done was 2 batteries and a water pump, and changed timing belt while it was torn apart. Oh, and exhaust manifold leak covered under warranty. Couple cosmetic repairs under warranty too. Been a good vehicle.

2000 Xterra with almost 218,000 miles.

However, it was totalled this past weekend when my husband hit a deer. I am really bummed - it ran great - I had that car since May of 1999, when they first came out. It was my first brand-new vehicle. If I didn't have 2 growing kids, I would buy another one. However, I really need a 3rd row seat. (No minivan for me though!) Anyone ever driven a Pathfinder?

Thanks,
Sherri

I'm up to about 230K on my 2000. Other than normal maint, I've rebuilt the steering box and am currently replacing the transmission - 1st gear went out and they don't do rebuilds. Got a few paint chips off the hood and one tiny rust bubble on the tailgate. When I wash and wax it, you'd swear it was a couple years old.

My 2006 off road is up to 39,000. Had the original rear differential go out at 10900. had the sending unit for the gas tank replaced at 38,000. I change the oil every 3000 and use mobile 1 synthetic oil. If it weren't for the high cost of gas I would be driving it a lot more.

I just sold my '03 with just under 150,000 on it. I bought a new 2012 which makes my third Xterra. The '03 never gave me any real problems outside of the normal and well known problems such as A/C issues related to leaking high pressure hose. I did all of the maintenance on it since buying it, which I think is the key to trouble free ownership of any vehicle. As I like to say, the professional mechanic is a car's worst enemy.

It also helped that I changed oil every 2,500 miles, always used Mobil 1 motor oil, A/T fluid, and LSD oil. Also always ran premium gas in it.

Another thing which helps guarantee trouble-free ownership is to never let your engine overheat. I did my own timing belt at about 90,000 miles and changed the water pump as many advise. At 100,000 I replaced radiator and fan clutch. I also changed radiator hoses and thermostat frequently. Preventive maintenance is always going to be cheaper than engine work.

I figured that if I had kept it much longer, I would be faced with changing the O2 sensors, exhaust system, and perhaps other expensive components.

I wish the second gen engines had cast iron blocks as the first gen does, but they are aluminum. Let's see how long I can make this one last.

Lastly, whenever I buy a new vehicle, I follow my own self-imposed break-in schedule, to include changing oil frequently for the first couple thousand miles. Also use dino oil until around 2,500 miles, when I switch to Mobil 1.

Posted this once before a while back. Hasn't been beaten yet!

'03 (now NINE YEARS OLD), 53,600+/- miles! That's only 6,000 miles a year. I live only 3 miles from work and for the last couple of years, if we (wife and I) go anywhere we take her car. Did I mention it's still in GREAT shape?

grin

How may clutches have you gone through in 156,000 mi.? Been reading about tons of clutch failures on 2nd gen. Manual Off roads. I have a 2006 with
38,000 mi.

Edited by Fang (20/05/12 08:50 PM)
Edit Reason: put 38 not 38,000mi.

I bought my 06 off road in April 2006. I worked out of town for until 2008 so it didn't get much mileage on it. I now have 43500 since I am now retired and drive it a lot more. Noticed that the fuel economy, If you can call it that in an Xterra, has gone down lately. I am going to run some injector cleaner through it this week and see if that helps.

Noticed that the fuel economy, If you can call it that in an Xterra, has gone down lately. I am going to run some injector cleaner through it this week and see if that helps.

Your plugs might be getting a bit long in the tooth, and, MAF cleaner might be a good idea too.

Its also possible that you need to change some lubes other than engine oil, like in the diffs, etc.

Going full synthetic saved me a ton o $

I have had the differential fluids changed with synthetic fluids. I always have changed my oil using synthetic oil. At this point I am not sure what other fluids I need to change.

When I got gas yesterday, my '03 still only has 54,500! (I live 3 miles from work!).

My 2001 Xterra XE has only 36,000 miles on it.

I've always had two vehicles since I've owned the X. I obviously don't use it every day, or for long drives.

In fact, I had to buy new tires a couple of years ago not because the original tires were worn ... but because they were dry rotting.

2002 XE with about 133k miles on it. Only broke down on me twice:

Starter failed while on vacation last year at about 120k.
Brake line rusted through and pissed brake fluid on the manifold causing a "small fire" earlier this year.

May 1999 Xterra XE Automatic 181,xxx miles. Just replaced a starter (original)last month. Other than normal maintenance and valve cover gaskets, no major failures. I do have a hole in the passenger side rocker panel from a meeting with a rock years ago and a couple of bubbles of rust on the passenger side rear wheelwell and one on the hatch. Just drove it 3100 miles to Moab to camp and wheel for a week. It always has been under powered in my opinion but this time across Vail Pass on Route 70 was 40 mph... and I was not even towing my camper. Looking at one of the new Pro models...

114,700. Currently on my:
Second timing belt,
Second set of shocks & brakes,
And third set of tires.

I went from single in college to married & two kids under the same rack.

I'll update XOC again when I'm on my third timing belt.

Cheers

Just over 90K and still going strong - no intention of getting rid of her any time soon!

2005 190k 6 sod. Clutch is still perfect. In fact just test drove a 2015 and it felt mushy. My timing chain needs replacement. Rear seals always fail on my axel. Replaced numerous times. Looking to trade it out for a 2015 Xterra. Love the vehicle.

'03' with 150K. Brand new (to me) runs great, but a small oil leak that fouls the starter motor. The mechanic says he fixed the oil leak, but there are still a few tiny spots on the cement. I like this car a lot, but the stereo is for modern younger technologist, not old men. But I'm figuring it out.

2003 X here bought with 74K on it in '06. Went to 196,000 (over 10 years) before it was rear ended by a tractor trailer at 20mph and totaled. Had just put fresh tires on it at 195,850!! I'm sure it would have gone the distance. RIP ONYX

Just recently turned over 100K! Rear brake line to the rear drivers side brake got a leak - will be replacing today. Otherwise the truck just keeps chugging along!
