About 2 months ago I bought an '04 Xterra 4x4, 3.3 V6, Auto trans with just over 87,000 miles. I am new to owning a Nissan and searched the forum but still have a question. It has been running fine ever since I bought it(and still is) but about a week ago the Service Engine Soon light came on. I had it checked and engine codes P0430(catalyst system fault-left bank) and P0328(knock sensor)showed. After searching this forum and reading about same codes it sounds like it could be a variety of fairly expensive issues to fix. My biggest question, since I live in Iowa and we don't have to pass emission tests for registering, is, will it hurt the engine to keep driving for awhile or does the problem need to be pinpointed and fixed immediately. Thanks for any feed-back because it sounds like their is quite a bit of experience on this forum.

If your X is not an SC model you dont have to worry about the KS code, that code will not affect the NA models, and will not turn on the CEL. So the one that is activating the CEL is the P0430, which I've had on a few times, usually happens when driving at a very steady speed, on flat roads for a mile or so without changing throttle position. I usually just erase the codes with my code reader, or sometimes I'll let it go a few days and it will reset itself.

Thanks for your reply! I forgot to mention that, it's not an SC model. When I had the codes checked the guy at the local Autozone store said it could be something like an issue with the catalytic convertor. He also said it could go for a long time without any real issues. It is still running great with no apparent issues but the CEL is still on and I have driven it quite a bit. I just don't want something to go wrong because I didn't do something. I really like my X and don't want to screw something up. I bought a Chilton's manual to learn more about it and so I can do some of the maintenance stuff. I joined this forum shortly after buying the X and have learned a lot already. Thanks again for your help!

Burn the chiltons for heat in the house, and read as much as you can on this site, there are a lot of people on here with a lot more first hand experiance than Chiltons could ever dream of!!

I'm not 100% sure, but I'm pretty sureat least some codes that are thrown, can reset themselves after so many "cycles" . in other words ,if a code is thrown for some problem with the fuel system for example that only happened once, It could reset itself after several, or maybe a dozen times of starting, driving shutting it down as long as the same thing doesnt happen again. However there may also be codes that once they come on, wont go away until either the codes are cleared by a code reader, at which point they may return shortly afterwards, or until the item causing the code is repaired, serviced, whatever.

I know this post is a bit old so not sure if you already fixed the CEL issue, but I had the same P0430 code a few months ago. It turned out to be the driver side pre and post cat o2 sensor that was causing the problem. My X still had factory ones and once I replaced them, the problem was fixed. Catalytic converters hardly go bad and they are expensive to replace.

The system is giving the error because the old o2 sensor was probably fouled up and giving the wrong voltages. The computer thinks the cat is not doing its job and throws the P0430 error. The knock sensor error also went away after I replaced the o2 sensors.

Car runs good now and fuel burns clean. Hope that helps.

Hey guys, hoping to revive this thread one more time. I have an '04 as well with the 430 code. I took a screenshot (shown below) of the reading coming from all 4 oxygen sensors and was hoping that someone here might be able to interpret. Maybe there will be something obvious there and that isn't obvious to me.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!
