I am not sure if this is covered in another thread, but does anybody know of an manufactorer of a hitch mount spare gas can carrier and an a gas can that will fit? If not, what are some other things you guys have done to carry spare gas cans on the trail besides mounting it on the rack? Thanks.

while it may seem like a great idea, what if you get rear-ended? Kaboom.

But if it were mounted up high enough, that might be better. I haven't heard of any other than the add-ons to the Calmini (I think it was?) rear bumper.

I'll post something next week. It is an add-on I adapated to the Calmini bumper. The gas can will be mounted to the spare tire.

The can will be inside this carrier.

Without a rear tire carrier/bumper, I think putting the spare gas on the roof is a better idea. There are tons of brackets available from many different companies to carry gas on your roof, such as those found at hannibalusa.com.

Whatever you do, don't buy cheap. Get a good Wedco NATO jerry can and a good holder. Expect to pay $100+ for the can and a good bracket. If you are carrying ont he roof then you have to get the NATO can because they can be carried on their sides while the cheap ass Blitz cans leak standing up!

I found a super jerry can holder for my swingaway at 4x4trailers.com, but they don't have one that will work on a roofrack.

Anyhoo, just do a search on Google or wherever for jerry can or jerry can brackets and you will get plenty of stuff to look at.

I was thinking of going up to George Washington State park or up to the mountains up north for a couple of days.

I think I will get a jerry can and holder for the roof. Can I get one without having to put a whole new rack on top? I would like to keep it stock up there if I could. Is there a rack that attaches to the stock rack? Thanks!

Still think it would be kinda hard to find yourself very far from gas in GWNF, but it might at least allow you to avoid coming down into town if you'd rather stay out in the boonies.

Check out www.xterras.net for info on the Greater DC Xterra Club if you're interested.

Well, when ChuckH and I were in Oregon last summer we were on a Back Country trail for 6 days. When we did cross a main road it was 50 miles to the nearest gas statiom. Would have been nice if each of us had 5 gallons of gas just in case!!!

Well yea, for the PNW, but Virginia ?
I can't see it being more than 10 minutes to any gas station on the densely populated East Coast.

I got all the parts and assembled it this afternoon. The Con-Ferr bracket bolts under the spare tire. The can holder itself is made by Garret Wade.

I also purchased the Nato can from them. DON"T BUY the Blitz cans they are CRAP!

Yep. The NATO cans are the best. I am thinking about building a holder for a couple of cans on my new bumper.
