Wiring for Tow Hitch

Just a quick question. I have a 2000 SE Manual X and I'm about to purchase a hitch off eBay. I was going to order the wiring with the hitch, but the seller wanted to make sure I needed it. He said that most X's come with the wiring already, but I thought I read somewhere that only automatic X's came with the wiring. So I guess the question is, do I need make this purchase of the wiring or not? Where do I need to look under my X for this wiring if I do for some reason have it? Thanks.

That is correct. The manual tranny Xterra does not come prewired. Check xterrastore.com or xterraparts.com prices for a OEM nissan wiring kit and compare prices to the one your guy is offering. ------------------ :wq! wqbang@southeastxterraclub.org

My 2001 SE 4x4 5-speed (w/o the factory or dealer installed hitch) came prewired - I just had to plug in the pigtail that came with the truck and it was ready to connect to a trailer.

That is strange. On the 2000's this was not the case. Anyone else with a 2001 that can confirm this? ------------------ :wq! wqbang@southeastxterraclub.org

Horsesh!t. My '01 5 speed was prewired and I even wrote a whole topic on how to improve the pre-wiring to eliminate having to plug/unplug the pigtail! Search the General forum for a thread called, "Tow Package Pigtail." ------------------ Thanks, kjw & the "PNUT-MNM" [This message has been edited by PNUTMNM (edited January 22, 2001).]

PNUT, Read the whole thread. I retracted what I said above stating that the 2001's may already come prewired and I might have misinformed because I have a 2000. I don't think what I said required such strong words... ------------------ :wq! wqbang@southeastxterraclub.org

I may be stupid but how do I tell if it is prewired or not? is the wiring up under the spare tire? How much is the pigtail?

Look in your owner's manual. There's a picture, although its not a very good one. Lie down under the rear of your X on the side opposite the first aid kit. There's a blue cap plug with four connectors on it plugged into a receiver jack up just above the upper lip of the spare tire.
I had so much trouble yanking that blue protective cap off that I finally just grabbed the bitch with some lineman's pliers and ripped it out. I threw the cap away, plugged in the pigtail, and wired it to a permanent receiver hitch with a spring trap door that I bolted to the back bumper.

Received my hitch last night. Looks really good. Will probably install this weekend. The wiring harness that we've been talking about serves purpose for when you're towing something correct? Or is it for the lights on the rear of the X? If it's just for towing, I might not need it since my main reason for getting the hitch was for a recovery point when off-roading. Who knows though, I might need to tow stuff in the future . ------------------ Hank 2000 Yellow SE 4x4 5 Spd. "Asian Persuasion"
