Has anyone purchased the Igloo PlentiKool cooler or heard anything about it? I'm thinking of buying it but I'm not sure if its worth it....

I'm not sure how relavent this reponse is, but I did buy a plug-in cooler/heater for our Subaru and it was definitely not worth the money.

It took up a lot of space, but didn't hold a great deal, it couldnt be used outside without buying an expensive adapter. You also have to make sure it isnt covered by anything. It was no use for camping and inconvenient to use on car trips, so we took it back. They told us that most of them end up getting returned.

and remember the consumer grade plug in coolers only keep things 40 degres F below ambient temperature. So if it is 100 degrees in the back of your truck, all you get is 60 degrees of chill. and though that might be good for sodas, it is probably not good for much else. Also on camping trips, unless you have made the mod for your outlets or leave the trucks power on all night, you get no chill.

If you have the money to blow, get the ARB electric cooler. it can freeze things. you could have popsicles in Moab with that thing. but you pay for it. i wish i cold afford one for GOX2 this year.

Good to know about this, as I was considering getting one... Not the Nissan one, but one from Target or something.

I don't plan on driving around 100 degree deserts, mostly just 80 degree beach days and snowboarding trips in 30 degree weather - so the cooling sounds like it would be fine in the summer, and the heating as well in the winter.

but remember that if it is 80s outside, how hot is it inside the truck? so unless you keep it outside teh truck in some shade and still pluged in, you still have that restriction.

oh yeah, and it is MAX 40 degrees below ambient. your results may vary. ahhh the fine print of products these days.

True, true - but I don't think their sole purpose is to heat/cool, but to "extend" same. Or is it?

I would only want the gizmo to keep stuff hot/cold in transport and then deal with it at the destination. A cooler that's still in the truck when you're on the shoreline does little good... Keep it filled with icepacks as per normal.

But for camping, yeah - it doesn't work too well unless it's always running.

you also need to make sure that you use the blue ice block thingies, not actual ice in it. if i recall correctly it is not meant to take liquid like a normal cooler. all the electrical bits don't care for it.

my rationality for not getting one, is how many $1.19 bags of ice does it take to equal what you paid for this beast and the limitaions it has? a $10 cooler from target and a bag of ice will get you pretty far and it'll be a while until the cost of the electric joby pays for itself. but i am anal in these respects.

I am not sure how much dealers and parts suppliers are selling this thing for, but I saw it at Bass Pro Outdoor World yesterday for 64.95. I was thinking some retailers were selling it for more for a while...

Any ARB dealer can get them. if you want some place local to you in VA, you can get one at 4x4connection. the coolers are REALLY expensive anywhere you get them. the smallest one is $695 i think. but as i said it can be a freezer, literally. and it pulls remarkebly VERY little power relative to what it does. you could leave the thing plugged into your X overnight running and have no problem.

That's only if you cut them up into small pieces. Or you could always make several trips....

...besides, what do you do when you are out driving around and all these babes show up for a ride? You can toss out the styrofoam cooler and ice and make more room quick OK, us 52 year old married guys can have our fantasies too, you know!

APP,

I know for a fact you can get them from 4wheelparts, if you have one in your area.
If not their toll free # is 1-800-421-1050.
As mentioned, they are very expensive but you can keep popsicles frozen while crawlin' around Moab.

We have used a powered cooler, we purchased from Target, quite a few times on long trips. On a trip to Las Vegas it was great. Stocked it up with waters, sandwiches, etc. When we got to the hotel, took it in and used it as a minibar.

It works very well in the winter, but in the summer, forget it.
