One of backup bulbs recently brunt out and I decided to Xplore the possibility of upgrading to something brighter and found that our friends at Courtesy Nissan / xterraparts.com have a solution available / in stock. You will have to call them since their webpages haven’t been upgraded yet to include this part.

These are direct push-ins and fit without modification according to Courtesy and feature 50-watt Halogen bulbs that are 2 ½ times brighter than stock. The Part # is 3156H and they cost $19.99 for a pair.

I'm going to check the wiring & fuse to make sure they can handle the additional load just in case and I will let everybody know how they work out.

Is that $19.99 for both or each?

For a second I thought I was loosing my mind until I saw the post had been edited. Thanks for the info. I may look into getting my backup lights upgraded since I have limo tint in the back and it becomes a little hard to backup in the dark with the stock bulbs.

I'm all for this, but I'd like to know that the housings/socket/wiring can stand up to a full minute or two of continuous use without overheating/melting before I get 'em. Care to be the guinea pig and test?

Sorry to say we confirmed the 3156H is not applicable to the Xterra. Totally different bulbs. We are testing a PIAA brand bulb now. We should have more info available sometime next week.

I was searching around on the JCWhitney site the other day and found some 50 watt back up bulbs for $15.99
I don't know if these are any different from the ones described already...

Nope, wrong style base. The X bulbs don't have a metal base, much less a round one. The bulb is basically just crimped flat (still glass) at the base with the wires sticking out and folded back over. I saw the same (JC Whitney style) bulbs at Trak Auto a few weeks ago.

it is a 921 bulb very cheap and very dull
the only place a 3156 bulb will work is in the rear signals and it would have to be yellow

so I'm getting the feeling that it's a big negative on using any of these?

We finished testing a PIAA reverse lamp bulb. Although it appears whiter and "looks cool", there does not seem to be any great benefit to the change.

The factory bulbs seem to illuminate the area as well as the PIAA's without risk to overheating wires or the lamp housing.
