Does anyone have experience with an Xterra as a toad four-down? I'd love to buy an xterra as my personal vehicle and as a toad for our motorhome, but seem to get mixed messages about:

Transmission: Manual vs Automatic?
Drivetrain: 4x4 vs. 4x2?
Warranty: Will it be void if towed 4 down?
Fluid Circulation: Is it necessary to stop and
exercise it every 500 miles?

The correct term for a vehicle towed behind a motorhome is "TOAD"

I am sorry.. I stand corrected. When you see people using "whut, sez, or dat" a lot on various forums because they cannot spell it bugs me. Sorry for not being up on the RV'ing lingo.

From what I recall...you must disconnect the rear drive shaft, make sure the T-case is in Neutral (if 4wd) and I would not do it with an automatic.

We have toaded a 2007 off road 6 speed (4 down) for about 5000 miles no trouble use a SMI brake rip
Transmission: Manual vs Automatic? Manual only
Drivetrain: 4x4 vs. 4x2? either
Warranty: Will it be void if towed 4 down? no
Fluid Circulation: Is it necessary to stop and
exercise it every 500 miles? yes

If your RDS is disco'd why would you not do it with an auto? Just make sure your front hubs are unlocked or get yourself a set of manual hubs and you should be fine.

Huh, I thought this thread would be about something else entirely...

The Owners Manual covers this in detail in Section 6 (In case of Emergency) and Section 9 (Technical and Consumer Information). It states that vehicles with Automatic Transmissions should never be "flat towed" (aka toading). Manual transmission vehicles are OK, as long as speeds are kept below 60MPH and distance is below 500 miles. For speeds or distances greater than list above, they recommend removing the propeller shaft. 4x4's should be in 2H.
