My 2005 emits a smell like hot burning oil whenever its driven in 4Lo. (I use 4Lo to get up & down appx 0.3 mi of an icy dirt mountain road. I don't use it anywhere else).

Is that normal?

Funny I never noticed it on the trail, but I used it somewhere else and noticed the smell.

Not sure if it is normal.

Hmm. Well, I'll get the dealer to look at it. Maybe I can find time to see if it smells only in 4Lo going up, or 4Lo going down, etc. 4Hi doesn't seem to cause the smell.

If you do a search this has been discussed since X was new in late 99. Mine has a 129,000+ on it and it still makes the burning smell. As far as I know, nobody has ever been able to figure out what it is.

Well, the only definitive thread I could find on this site was started in early 2005, not 1999. I'm not sure if its the same problem or not. Its odd that, as you say, no one seems to have a clue what is causing it.

I get the same thing as you when I have to use 4 lo. I'm not worried about it. The t-case warning light never came on so I'm fine with it. My friend went wheelin with me yesterday and noticed and I told him that it was normal.

Yeah, I don't get any warning lights, either, or notice any fluid levels dropping. Maybe its just the way it is....I guess that's the conclusion of the similar threads also.
