Does anyone whom is mechanic savoy know what makes the noise that sounds similar to the sound a little kids bike makes when you stick a baseball card in the spokes. That sound come when I accelerate, but comes from the engine area. Thank you for your input. EmbassyMarine

i had the exact same problem with my X..i took it to the dealer and what they found was that it was the heat shield from the exhaust...so have them tighten the heat shields and it should take care of the problem....it's kinda a metal hissing sound....so if this is the sound then it's the heat shield and its rather loud....good luck

Maybe you should remove the kids bike from your engine compartment.

Is it at a certain rpm or through the entire band?

I own a 2002 SE auto 4x4. This sound only occurs when I am driving up a hill and step on the gas to accellerate. That is the only time I hear it. The suggestions you all gave are going to be helpful, thank you. Do you think it may be something different if it is only when I am going uphill??? Thanks for any information...

I have a 2000 auto and it was at 38,000 when mine started doing it. I was in San Francisco when I noticed the sound, only going up steep inclines. A few thousand miles later it was doing it quite often on hills and flat sections. I could get it to do it when i would push on the accelerator and the tranny would not down shift but try to get some more mph out of the gear it was in. To me it sounds like a manual transmission car that is lugging, not as loud but similar.
