While going up Steep Dirt Hills, it's good to have it on 4LO, but then approching a downhill..is it safe to take out of 4WD completely, or just leave on 4WD? or it doesn't matter..I would think you would not need 4WD if you are going Downhill...any feedback, would be appreciated!!!

Leave it in 4Lo, otherwise you're putting all the engine braking through 2 tires instead of distributing it across all 4.

Keep it in 4LO!

The engine compression slows your vehicle, sparing the brakes. Also, you may get some bounce on the downhill and 4WD is handy if you need to speed up a bit to straighten out.

Hmm...that makes sense...I just wasn't sure the safe way to to do this...I thought it would be the opposite, if you leave it on 4WD, and would put the pressure on the front drive axle...but your'e reply's does makes alot of sense...Thanks guys...

At GOX this year I had the truck in 4lo going down steep mountain trails, at the end of each day run I found that the rims were hot to the touch. I can only imagine what would happen if I took it out of 4wd completely (prob. warped rotors)So I'd have to agree with everybody and say leave it in 4lo.

having a 5-speed combined with that makes a perfect combo for downhill 4wheeling in my experience. a few weeks ago i went wheeling w/ the sccx and that's wehre i really grew to appreciate the control of a 5-speed. whether it was a steep uphill or downhill climb, the transmission really made me feel more confident about the whole situation.

In my experience, it's a lot safer to leave it in 4LO. Using only 2WD on steep downhills (esp. slippery ones) can tend to cause the rear end of the truck to slide sideways, possibly causing a loss of control. Leave it 4LO, and descend safely and not sideways.
