Here's a map of the trail from the book.
Trail Map .
As you can see from the map, it appears to be two campgrounds near Pinecrest Lake.
From THE book:
To Get There:
Head east on Hwy. 108. Bear left past the Ranger Station at the Pincrest turnoff. Continue another 3.5 miles to Herring Creek Road and turn right. Reset your odometer. Continue on the road after the pavement ends at 5.4 miles. Just past the "Gargoyles" Nature Trail, turn left at 6.7 miles where a sign points right to Herring Creek Reservoir. The road climbs and gets a bit rougher. Bear right at 8.5 miles where 5N06Y goes left. Turn left at 8.7 miles on 5N74. This starts the 4-wheel-drive route.
We should arrive at the trail head shortly after noon. If you keep your FRS (...assuming you have one or CB) turned on, you should be able to hear us.
