How do I tow my xterra? We need to tow it about 4 hours. We will be towing it on our 1990 Ford Bronco. Can I flat tow it? or rear end up or front end up? or just trailer it?

Trailering it is always better. It saves putting the miles on the bearings, etc. All 4 wheels off the ground.

The real risk is the transfer case. You'll blow it up if you don't tow the vehicle properly. There are two schools of thought:

1) Put the T-case in neutral, and put the transmission in neutral. You're good to go, in theory. This won't work with an auto, though. And some guys will swear that this method will tear your t-case apart anyways.

2) Trailer it. This method has never blown up a t-case. Ever. Not even once.

There you go - Have a safe trip!

There's a whole section on towing it in the owners manual. Never had to tow one myself.

At best case, you want to trailer it so that none of the 4 wheels are on the ground.

At worst case (if your X is 2WD) you want to tow it with the rear-end raised up on a dolly of some sorts so that only the front tires are making contact.

If you've got a 4WD X and you have a worse case scenario it'd involve removing the driveshaft leading to the rear axle and tow it with the front of the vehicle raised up on a dolly.

Yes, there is a neutral position in the t-case. If you look real close, you'll see a neutral selection.

I don't know what you're saying here...

Christi's X is 4x4 - read the profile. My original post reflects many of the thoughts on how to tow a 4x4 vehicle.

FYI, it's just 4 bolts to undo the rear of the driveshaft where it connects to the diff... not that big a deal to undo it and ziptie it up to something.

This whole Gen I vs. Gen II thing... My mistake on presuming we were in Gen I mode.
