What DOES constitute a well-written protest song?
CSN&Y's "Ohio?"
Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth?"
Mellencamp's "To Washington?"
Lennon's "Imagine?"
Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On?"
Springsteen's "Born in the USA?"
CCR's "Fortunate Son?"
Not all the songs you listed there are what can be considered "protest songs". Not at least war protest songs.
Lennon's "Imagine" was more an ode to world socialism and atheism than it was a war protest song. His more famous protest song was "Give Peace a Chance".
Springsteen's "Born in the USA" is just an anti-American song written to denigrate a past war and past American policy. It was also a criticism of then current policy against the communist Soviet Union. Springsteen was always an ass. Besides hating his country, he hates cops too.
I can't say what is the best protest song. Maybe Darryl Worley's "Have You Forgotten" is the best song that protests the protesters.
Is
THIS a protest song?
