for the conspiracy theorists - what a coincidence that the truck just happened to crash just at the exact 100 ft stretch where a monster fire would do the most damage. IF it had wiped out 100ft earlier or later and the fire would have just burned up into the air instead of getting trapped under another structure, doing the most damage.
In defense of the driver, that curve is a real killer. There is a long straight section on hwy 80 and then the road splits and if you aren't especially attentive, that curve gets on rather quickly. At 3am - he was probably on mental cruise control and hit the curve going 70mph instead of 50mph. It's a mistake that ALL of us do - its just that this time was (MUCH MUCH MUCH) more costly.
Nobody died - which is amazing all things considered. The driver somehow crawled out before the fire got him and he walked 1.5 miles to a gas station where he found a taxi which took him to the ER. The guy even tried to pay his fare when they arrived - the taxi driver wouldn't let him, considering he was all blistery and bleeding from crawling out of a burning tanker truck.
