Too stupid and tired to figure this one out-

Hey folks. Simple question. My wife and I broke up our triple retail concrete patio and steps. Tossed the concrete into the corner of the yard making a 8ft by 8ft based pyramid that is a little over 4 feet high. So how many cubic yards is that? Getting estimates for a container. I'm thinking just under 3 cubic yards. For that matter-any suggestions on how to get that to the dump besides a roll on roll off container. Just moved here-so we don't know any one with a pick up truck. I don't want to kill my Xterra either. The local rent-o-roma will not rent me a dump trailer. They say I need a 3/4 truck for that. Thanks in advance.

you're close. It's just over 3 cubic yards.
Anyway, to get rid of it...I know the local Home Depot here has a HD pickup with a hydraulic dump/bed that can be rented by the hour. Might give them a shot.

Joe: Figure most concrete slabs are 4 inches thick. One cubic yard of concrete is 81 square feet at 4 inches thick. Take the previous dimensions of your patio and figure from there and that should put you in the ball park as far how much concrete you have. The dumpster is a different matter all together. You will max the dumpsters weight capacity at about 1/4 to 1/3 of it's cubic capacity with all that concrete.

Yep, HD, Lowes, or really any rental place will rent you a 3/4 or 1 ton HD truck.

A lot of the container services will not let you fill the container with concrete, at least around here. Make sure they allow it, and tell them what you have to make sure they don't hit you with a big penalty or make you unload it in your driveway when they find it's filled with concrete.
You could have over to 10,000 lbs of concrete there. A few years back I helped a friend move 6 tons, we used a 20ft flatbed trailer, and another truck with an 8ft bed... Wasn't terribly cheap to dump it... if you can find a container company willing to pick that up for you quite possibly will save money... and the effort to unload.

Hi Guys-Thanks for the responses. All good suggestions. I agree-just over 3 cubic yards of cement. The HD trucks from HD and Lowes are a possibility. But when you figure out the additional costs of the dump trailer and disposal fee-it does not become cost affective. Craigs List-never used it. But I now have a time issue (my wife wants it done yesterday. LOL). The container companies all have hidden fees. I have told these guys up front that I have 3 cubic yards of cement, plus other waste. I have received quotes from $150.00 up to $400.00. They nickle and dime for each type of waste dumped as well as time to do the job, gas tax, etc. I'm going with Waste Management. For $200.00, I'm getting a 20 cubic yard trailer. I can dump all the other yard waste plus any junk we find in the garage/house. That fee includes tax and disposal fee, one week to get the job done. So I'm pleased. My wife says that for every dollar I save, that will go to my custom bumper for my truck. Shrock any one? LOL.
TravelingFool-trust me, I wanted to beat the snot out of the cement. We started of with a 16 pound sledge hammer. I figured, just a small patio, no larger than 6x6 with two sets of steps. The idiots who did the job started the pad no deeper than 2 inches deep. The cement exploded with the first hit. I figured this would be easy. By the time we got to the steps, the cement was over 3 feet deep. There was even re-bar thrown in. We had to get a electric jack hammer to finish the job. Then, to add insult to injury-the idiots cemented in the wire reinforcement of the stucco into the steps. So when I took out the steps, out came a portion of the exterior wall. Just adds to my irritation about this triple retail house. Any how-I ask you this. If you beat the cement to dust, then what? I just want to get this crap out of our yard. Also-if you are going to call me a pussy, please prefix that statement with "I like ...". LOL.
Thanks again guys.

$200 is a good price. Depending on what your dump charges, your disposal fee could approach that.

$200 is really cheap. I'm doing a lot of renovation on my 107yo house, and get a dumpster pretty regularly. I use a local company that has the best price by a long shot, and awesome service. $260, all-inclusive for a 15yard rolloff (that's the largest that will fit in my small city side lot) I've also done the jackhammer and remove a sidewalk (all the way around the house), and had to get rid of the concrete. A dumpster is the only way to go. You can get it on a truck, but you still have to take it somewhere, and there aren't many legal options, and none of them are cheap. Typically, the dumpster policy is you can fill to the fill line (a few inches from the top) with assorted debris, or halfway to the fill line with concrete/rock (this includes plaster).
I would plan on a larger dumpster than you think you need. You will always find more crap in the garage, attic, etc... that you can get rid of while you have the chance. Also, you might want to see if neighbors are interested in going in with you to get rid of some of their crap. It will make the price a bit cheaper. Even if you don't plan on it, they will ask to use your dumpster once it shows up. Tell them what it cost you, and ask 'em to chip in a few bucks. Also, if it is visible from the street, you may get "drive by dumpers" that throw crap in there without permission. Beat them with an iron pipe.
Try to find a company that has a hydraulic "hook" truck, as they'll be able to place the dumpster much more precisely. Also plan to fill in the holes in the yard where the dumpster wheels landed, and re-seed. These things are heavy and will tear up the lawn something fierce. Most cities don't let you park a dumpster on the street or alley even for a few minutes. The city will tow the dumpster, and the dumpster company will charge you an arm and a leg to get it out of impound.
Last bit of advice, make a ramp out of stout plywood to wheel your wheelbarrow right into the dumpster and dump it. It is MUCH easier than lifting the rubble over the side, or out of the wheelbarrow. Your back will thank you.

Where i Line a 20 yard is 550 and 30 yard is 650 plus additional fuel charges. I put ptobably 5 yards of concrete and rock into a dumpster last year and then covered it all with wood. I dont think they knew until the had it emptied. No extra charge but at 550 for a 20 yard I should have been able to pur concrete in it and have it dumped.
