You're getting 8-9 mpg?! That doesn't sound right. Well, maybe it is if it's all city driving and you're flooring it from stoplight to stoplight. If not, then that just doesn't sound right.

You live in Reno which is a stones throw from the best off roading in the west. It's a 4x4, take if off roading and you'll care less about the power. My 4runner has soooo much less power than the xterra but I really don't care because it's so much fun to wheel.

So roughly 8000 miles in 4 months, all highway, and you are getting 8 mpg? A brand new X will not get mileage like that unless you are beating the shit out of it.

Regardless, it's not the fault of the truck... it's a niche vehicle that does a great job filling that niche. Bottom line is that you are stuck with an impulse buy that YOU made and there is no easy way out. Anyone can go buy a brand new X for the money you want to get for yours (and BTW, going on about how shitty your X is in various forums will not attract potential buyers).

The quickest fix for you would be to visit your local Chevy dealer, trade in your X, and use the generous GM factory rebates to help offset your negative equity. Just research your next vehicle more thoroughly before signing on the dotted line.

Xterra is still in my good graces at 120k.

Hey, impulse buying new cars, whining about it and looking for someone to get you out of trouble... Could it be that... Your not my X... No it couldn't be!!!

Rev'n -that's what it sounded like to me too.

They took advantage of me...I went to car dealer...a place that sold cars, and I was SO excited about buying it, that I didn't notice that the only thing I like about driving is not being supplied by what I'm driving...when I went to test drive it to make sure that I would want to buy it?

- So those bad evil naughty dealers took advantage of my stupidity/lack of judgement/blondness/excitement over something that has yet to be identified... (Check-off as appropriate)...and sold me the truck I wanted really badly so much that I ignored whatever contrary information I had.

That makes the dealers very naughty. Can you imagine?

I think the dealer, seeing how much she wanted the truck after researching it, looking at it, and test driving it, and being very excited about buying the truck, and making an offer to buy it, should have refused to sell it to her.

He obviously made a half hearted attempt to discourage her by raising the price, but it just didn't work.

So - Its the dealers fault.

If you are a street racer, then why did you even consider a 4x4 truck to begin with!??!? [Freak]

I was in the Reno/Tahoe area this past July, and saw a LOT of X's all over the mountain. Funny thing is, most of the drivers were smiling! laugh

Good luck on selling it, but when you go to buy your next vehicle, THINK while you are test driving it. If it is as slow as you say, it must have taken hours to complete your 'long' test drive! I think that you should have noticed ...

And you couldn't find this out BEFORE you purchased?

Never ceases to amaze me. Next to home ownership, buying a vehicle is the largest purchase most people will make, yet people treat it in a cavalier manner, doing little to no research and getting bent over at the local dealership without a second thought.

Here's some advice before you change vehicles again - do some research. Rent or borrow the vehicle you think you want and drive it around for a while. Heck, a test drive could have told you all you needed to know about acceleration in the X.

Also check out a good site like http://www.carbuyingtips.com to learn how not to get taken at the dealership - sounds like you could REALLY stand to read up. A few nights of reading for several thousand dollars in savings isn't really a bad trade - but it's your money.

It has to be hands down, the most gutless vehicle I have ever driven let alone owned.
I dunno, I've had pleanty of gutless GM vehicles - oldsmobile Cutlass that was a total piece of junk. My parents '81 GMC High Sierra pickup was gutless - amazingly reliably for early '80s GM vehicle, but gutless. And lets not even get started about the '95 Jimmy :p

Quote:
It's driving me insane. I also have a really big issue with the fact that it is foriegn.
Now this is just plain stupid - you knew it was produced by a foriegn manufacturer (they are actually built in Tennesee with majority domestically produced parts) before you bought it - no one's fault for your irrational prejudice than yourself.

Quote:
I still can't believe I broke down and bought something other than a Chevy in the first place (I'm a chevy girl, this is the 1st vehicle w/ 4 wheels I have ever owned that's not a one) I just want it out of my Garage.
Well, we come to the real issue - nothing but Chevy will be good enough.

If you really are looking at getting a new truck, and interested in being objective instead of emotional, Chevy is currently on the bottom of every major review of current trucks out there. The Nissan Titan and Ford F150 are on top, with Dodge in the middle.

But heavens, don't let us confuse you with the facts [Freak]

I can't have much sympathy for you. The X really isn't that bad of a vehicle. Yeah, it doesn't accelerate like a sports car (or a car) but lets see - yeah, IT'S A TRUCK. And not all X's are pokey, mine beats pleanty of vehicles off the line smile but that's just a silly expectation for a truck.

Sounds like you got bit by unrealistic expectations and not doing your homework. No one should be unhappy with their purchase. The true halmark of wisdom is learning from your mistakes and not repeating them - do your reasearch, read a site like http://www.carbuyingtips.com and move on...

Really, how much sympathy did you expect here of all places? List it on Autotrader and if you are that desperate, you are just going to have to eat it :p

Great! You realize you made a poor decision. Unfortunatly claming it won't happen again isn't good enough. Whats your plan? How sepcifically are you not going to get ripped off again in the future? What is your strategy?

You need to have it in detail, preferably written out, and need to understand fully all aspects of the pricing for the vehicle you want.

I took your advice and went to the site- great info! But look what I read: "Nissan Dealers
Nissan dealers are the fairest on pricing. They actually like informed consumers, who are easier to sell to than a buyer shooting from the hip. In fact, we get praised all the time by Nissan dealers, and have received valuable tips from Nissan dealers. I wanted to give you a warning however, about the Nissan Xterra. My friend Greg bought one at a local infamous Automall. I'd have sent him to another Nissan dealer. Greg had his Xterra in the shop about 10 times for failures ranging from paint issues to ABS failures. His Nissan dealer was difficult to work with, blaming him for everything, denying there were problems, all the same reasons that I left GM for Lexus. They had his Xterror in there so often, they "promised" to pay him back one month's payment. He's still waiting for the check. He called Nissan's customer circus line EVERY SINGLE DAY TWICE A DAY for 2 MONTHS." (http://www.carbuyingtips.com/car3.htm?x=0tekxgl_eoyyqkz_ttky3&y=0ncx40x25x56)

My heart sank. I'm pretty sure I want to buy an Xterra but I keep running into bad news like this. frown

This car-buying process is a pain-in-the-ass!! Thanks for the site though, I need all the help I can get. smile

You are in Reno... you should visit here:

http://www.xterraownersclub.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=13;t=000873

Maybe the positive atmosphere will change your feelings - or you will sucker someone into the atmoshere and buy it off you.

Any dealer can be good or bad. Unfortunatly there is just no way to gauge. I have two local Nissan Dealers that are great. The ones when I lived in Vegas were the pits. Just varies unfortunatly.

Check out this thread for a good strategy, and this thread for a sample fax to use.

Good luck...

Post where you are from Amy in a new topic to find a good dealer near by you. Here in CO I would say #1 Tynans Nissan or #2 Peak Nissan.

Depending on the mileage you should be able to get 19-20k for it in trade. whenever you trade out of a vehicle this soon after buying it, you take a hit of at least 5k. I see you are in Reno? Head back to NoR and swap it for something closer to your liking...just realize that you will most likely HAVE to keep what you get for a while.

I would check out the Titan if you want power (but anything with a more modern drivetrain would give you that)...and I don't know what you were getting for mileage in the X, but mine consistantly got 12. The Titan so far is getting 19 mpg and I'm not going light on the pedal. Anyhoo, PM me if you need a name of someone to talk to at the dealer as I know a few of them (Nissan freak that I am...) [Wave]
Well thank you for the advice and the offer of help with the dealers, but I think I'm going to stick to my Chevys from ow on. They have never let me down. This whole thing has taught me a lesson though... I'm a young female, so I think they saw that as an opportunity to rip me off, but never the less, I let it happen, but I can say that it will never happen again. That's part of the reason I still have it, I'm waiting to get the best deal I can, and waiting for those dealer rebates to help with the negative equity in the X.[/b]
Just get a smart man to make your decisions for you. Not only would he have not paid so much, he woulda bought you the VW Beetle you probably shoulda ended up with in the first place!

[Freak]

Advice: Drive to Colorado and trade in your X. The resale value here is excellent. Bring somebody smart with you so you don't get swindled again.

If you're getting 8mpg something is wrong - take it to a mechanic.

If you sell it you're going to lose a lot of money. Maybe you'll learn something from this experience.

Why didn't you at least get the supercharged model? I paid $19K for my '02 (in May of '03, so less than a year) for my SE/SC w/ 9K miles. Now you will be battling against the new '05 generation coming any day and you are way upside down.

Have someone steal it. smile

I know what you are going through. I'm selling my '72 K-20 because I need a dependable vehicle with four wheel drive. This thing is a gas hog and will never be as mean as my Chevy beast, but with the super charger and intake/exhaust mods, it's almost as quick.

well, after replying quickly for the first couple days of this thread, the author seems to have realized her stupidity and dropped off of the forum. to highlight a few of the stupid points she had:
1. losing to geo metros in stoplight races
2. getting 8-9 mpg with almost entirely highway miles (are you SURE the parking brake isn't on)
3. complaining that she can't sell her car for $24-25K when it has a book value of $21K
4. complaining about purchasing a foreign car that probably has as many domestic parts (if not more) than the chevy's she loves so much
5. complaining about paying WAY too much for the car. (where was your brain when you signed the paperwork?)

need i say more? [Crybaby]

the window sticker of every car sold in the US must list the source of all parts in the vehicle by % (not the specific parts), and also the country of assembly. the % of parts thing is a federal law because consumers started complaining that they didn't know where the heck their products were coming from anymore. similarly, i think every product (or at least almost every one) now has to list where it's made by law.

but as for a website that lists this info for cars? i would just try googling it...
