I am a Firefighter/Paramedic in TN, just bout my xterra 4x4 last Friday. Am putting in my Motorola Maxtrac mobile in and equiping it with wig-wag headlights, corner strobes, and tailight flashers.

Wondering if there are any other people out there (in this forum) with emergency equipment installed on thier xterra- and if so if they had any problems installing it or any helpfull tips.

Thanks mmUTK

Fortunately my dealer also has the contract selling police cars to the state. They're experienced and they are certified. The work order reads installed by the dealership so no voiding warranty. I have a pair of hide-aways in the headlights and a pair in the rear (clear area of lens.) I couldn't find a place to put the power pack so I put (2) 2 head power packs inside the power packs. The 2 head power pack is solid state and sealed so its not affected by water, humidity, etc. I have them both wired to 1 switch to the left of the steering wheel. The switch is mounted in the blank switch area. They are whelen brand. I also bought an extra crosspiece for the roofrack and mounted a 6 strobe whelen mini edge which I wired to a cigar plug. I have a 10 amp inline fuse as the unit draws 9.6. On the dash I have a Deckblaster also wired to a cigar plug. No problems with power or blown fuses. Sounds like a bit much but we're 1 mile from NY City and when you're being buzzed by tractor trailers going 70+ mph in the rain or snow on the highway you want all the light you can get. I opted not to do the wigwags because they have to splice into existing wiring harnesses and that would void the warranty. By using hide-aways you're running a separate wire and its own fuse. If you want to e-mail me offline I'd be happy to talk more about it.

Aloha,

I'm a police officer with the Honolulu Police Dept. and also a proud
owner of a 2000 Nissan Xterra 4x4 XE silver ice. Here in Honolulu,
senior officers are allowed to use their personal vehicles for
police duty. We receive a monthly subsidy, free gas, and insurance.
Because the Xterra is one of the vehicles on the "approved vehicle"
list I get to drive my X all the time. And no, I do not transport
prisoners in my X. We call for a marked vehicle for that duty. The
only indication that my X is a police vehicle is a blue Whelen
mini-edge lightbar mounted to the roof rack and the uniformed
officer behind the wheel. When off-duty, I simply remove the
lightbar.

The department installed a radio, siren and removable roof light. I
supplemented that with two pairs of hide-away strobes in the front
and another two pairs in the rear. I installed a pair of clear
hide-aways in the headlights and replaced the bulbs in the foglights
with another pair of hide-aways (since there is no fog in Honolulu).
I have the front strobes connected to a 4 outlet 80w Nova power
pack. I installed one pair of hide-aways in the brake light housing
and another pair of strobes in bogus auxiliary backup light housings
near the trailer hitch. The rear strobes are connected to a 4 outlet
90w Nova power pack. Both power packs are located under the front
passenger seat. The switches to activate my Mini-edge, front and
rear strobes, and siren are located where my cupholders used to be.
I modified my center console to accommodate the Motorola radio head,
switch box and a bank of three 12v power outlets which are
constantly hot. I also have a Whelen PA/airhorn installed with the
control box under the driver's seat. To avoid sucking my battery dry
I installed a Optima "yellow top" battery and I try not to run my
equipment with my engine off. I did all installations myself to save $$$. Been using this setup since May 2000 with not even a blown fuse.

Please check out the pics in my briefcase.

Brian! I thought you had fallen into the ocean or something. How are you? I still have the video of your truck flashing the world at the first HIGOX. Let me know if you want a copy.

I have 6 Strobes in my X, one clear in each front corner light, blue in the headlights and clear in the reverse lights. I am a volunteer FF. I have had no problems with mine.
