#18116 - 25/03/06 02:11 PM Took an X for a test drive

I took a 2002 X SE out for a test run this afternoon and i loved it!!

pics here
http://www.kelli.ca/xterra

They're asking $18,995 for it and i know i can get it down.. it's a fair price.. but it has 93,000 km on it (about 58,000 miles)

Do you think that's a lot for a car i'd like to keep for at least 5 years? I only drive about 10,000 km (6200 miles) per year, but i want this to last.

Any opinions would be great. The dealer is going to pull the maintenance records for me and i'll do a VIN check .. but i was just curious if the 2002 X has a good reliability record that will give me minimal repair costs.

Also.. does it have a timing belt or chain and when does that need replacing?

thx!

kelli

From the look of the Pics, that X looks like it was well kept...and with only 58,000 miles for a 2002...that's damn good...I have a '03 with 56,000...you did not mention if it was a 4x4 or not, and I could not really tell in the Pics...if it is, check out any Offroad damage, Body and Bottom of the X...If all goes well...JUST DO IT !!!
I had no problems whatsover with my '03 X...Nissan has a reputation for Great Reliabilty...you can't go wrong...

Check Kelly Blue Book online: www.kbb.com

Looks like the "dealer price" is about $15970 if it's in excellent condition (4WD, A/T, SE).

Remember, the dealer has to make money on the deal. Same vehicle from a private party would fetch $13,510.

Personally, as much money as they're asking, and with Nissan dealers selling for close to invoice pricing, you're much better off buying new.

Case-n-point, a new 2006 Xterra, X model, 4WD, A/T, $21,609 invoice, MSRP of $22,850.

Unless you can get that Xterra for close to the $13K figure... I'd seriously reconsider. Hmmm, new smell, monster motor, warranty...

Face it, I'm a bad influence. [Spit]

Signature block doesn't indicate it, but it looks like the original poster is in Canada, thus the apparently higher price. The $18.9k price shocked me at first, because we bought our 2004 X new for $19.5k (US).

Still, given the current exchange rate, that price equates to $16,200 US. Still a bit high, in my opinion. Try talking them down a couple thousand (CAD) and see what they say.

I'd echo what the others have said about the price, and I'll address these questions.

Reliability is excellent and the repairs should be minimal, and it will need a timing belt changed at 105,000 miles.

My apologies, guys. Yes, i'm in Canada. It only comes in 4x4 up here and MSRP for the 2006 S trim is around $35K with freight and PDI.

Unfortunately you can't just ad the exchange to the price you guys pay down there.. the price of vehicles is higher up here.. at least it is for the X.

I'm pretty sure that once i run the VIN and the dealer gives me the run-down on the maintenance records i'll probably decide to buy it. I'm so excited i can hardly stand the wait =)

Kelli, you should go to http://www.nissantruckclub.com/ntc/zzforum/portal.asp which is a Canadian Xterra and other Nissan 4x4 Club. They should be able to help you on the price and review issues.
