Man, a rock just hit my windshield the other day and caused a small crack. The crack isn't very noticeable right now, however I know how quickly those suckers will spider out across my entire windshield. Without having to replace my windshield, does anyone know of anything that can be put on the crack to keep it from spreading? I thought I heard something before about that being possible, but I've never had a reason to look further into it...until now.

Call your insurance company. Many of them offer chip repair for free as opposed to windshield replacement where they may charge you your deductable. If they don't then any windshield or glass shop should be able to fix it for $40 to $100 depending on where you go to.

Depending on the state your insurance is for... they may offer a $0 deductable. NYS (where my car is titled) has a $0 deductable glass coverage that comes with your comprehensive. I'm not an insurance guru but I know if I had any glass on my car damaged it would be replaced for free. I'm assuming this is because NYS requires insurance companies to have the glass coverage.

A buddy of mine in WA does not have glass coverage. I guess what I am trying to say is check your policy information.

You can also get a $5 kit from any auto parts store that will allow you to fix it yourself. It works OK, I fixed a chip with one, and it isn't as noticiable, and hasn't spread.

Shrug. My policy says $200/$0 Glass Comprehensive Deductable. I believe I have $0 glass because I have my deductable set to $200. It's all lumped together. I can't seperate the two.

a month after i got an X, my windshield cracked, then the insurance company gave me a new one, free since it was road hazard and i was on the highway when it happened. then it happened again, but they could repair it, so they sent me to the glass guy and i had him explain to me what he did to fix it. he said that they sucked the air out with a vacuum, then they injected epoxy into the void, then filled in the gap with pressure. the crack is still noticeable, but not horrible and it won't grow. this was free for me too since it was covered with insurance, but i wouldn't imagine it costing more than about $40 to have done. they sell kits to do this yourself for about $5, but i would rather trust a professional than myself on something as important as your windshield.
laters and good luck, it sucks having a cracked windscreen.

Wow, thanks a million for everyone's help and advice. I'll contact my insurance company first thing and see what they say. If nothing else, I'll try an over the counter chip repair mentioned.
Thanks again!
