I got dynamat on the floor and the front doors, and my optima installed. Passenger doors and rear hatch next.

What type of Dynamat did you use? I think they come in different styles. Did you notice a decrease in road noise? I've been thinking of doing some sound damping on my Xterra to bring down the road noise and hopefully to kill the noise from the rear fenders when driving in the rain. Let us know your results.

dynamat extreme. extreme is much better (IMO) the original. You need a heat gun with original, and it's not as good, especially with high heat areas.

I lined the front door and basically covered the floor. I still plan to do the rear doors (maybe tonight) and the rear 1/4 panels, along with the hatch (which rattles like a mofo).

I noticed a definate improvement in road noise and floor heat. When the engine switches gears, it's hardly noticable and you can bearly hear the locks in the doors anymore.

When it's all said and done, I'll have atleast 40 sq. feet of dmat in the X. I'm putting an 8w7 in the passenger side rear 1/4 panel, so the dmat will be well worth it.

Just out of curiosity, what did it cost?

I got an Extreme Bulk pack on Ebay for $109 + S/H ($30....it's heavy). There's 36 sq feet in a bulk pack. If you're gonna do it, get a DURABLE roller. I'm a FIRM believer in using D'mat where ever possible. Here are some picks from my Monte Carlo D'mat install:

PS: got the rear door D'matted tonight smile

How hard is that stuff to install for someone who's never used it before? Sounds like it might be a decent investment at some point.

Anyone use Herculiner (or something similar to Rhino lining) for sound deadening? I just took my carpet out, and I don't think Dynamat will hold up to foot traffic.

It's pretty easy to install. Just don't pull off the wax paper until you're ready to actually stick it to the metal, 'cause it's REALLY sticky. There are plenty of "dynamat application guides" on the internet.

Cyclemut >

Never used it, but I have heard of it. I'm not sure if it would work as nice as D'mat, but it couldn't hurt. I just think it would be VERY messy. D'mat will hold up to the foot traffic just fine. Getting into every little cranny might be easier with the liner, depending on application, but I'm not sure if that gains you much. Inversly, a little bit of D'mat goes a LONG way. smile

Not to hijack post, it's related.

Use this Quite Car as a spray in dampener and then spray over it with some type of liner of your choice.
Some, and I can remmeber who, have taken out their carpet and found it way too hot and noisey and have had to put it back. The Quiet car should help with the heat and of course the noise.
It's paintable also.
Check out the video's on the home page.

Still this whole area of noise reduction is $$$$.

Just saw your pix, Skydive. Do you really hear a difference in road noise? I've never used any type of sound dampener in a car before, but I always thought that every single surface would need to be covered to actually have any effect. Of course those dampening products can get pretty expensive too, which is why I never bought any. With the amount of coverage you have on your doors and floor, if you say that you can tell a difference then I will probably do this myself also. Let me know. Thanks.

yes, I can tell a difference after applying the dynamat. I have done all four doors and the floor boards. I still need to do the rear 1/4 panels and some other areas. Eventually, I'm gonna do the outside wheel wells with dynashield to help quiet it down on the highway. The extreme bulk pack on ebay is about $120 shipped, so it's not THAT expensive.

So you did the doors and floor boards with just 1 extreme bulk pack? If thats the case, thats not too bad at all. I've take the door panels off before and that is pretty easy and quick, but what about the carpeting and seats and stuff? Does it take long to disassemble and reassemble everything? Also, do you know where I can find instructions on taking everything out, or is it pretty straight forward?

The extreme bulk pack has 9 pieces in it. You'll need atleast 4 to do the floor. Basically, one piece in each quadrant. Figure one piece in each door and that bring the total to 8. I recommend you cut the last piece in 1/2 and use the 1/2s in the front doors again, because they are larger then the rear doors, and have a speaker in them. I did the outside skin in mine. Later, I'm gonna get another extreme kit and do the metal under the panels. I also plan on using some dynashield in the wheel wells and d'matting the rear 1/4 panels inside and out.

I love D'mat, and you can't ever have too much IMO.

Tommy,

disassembling the X is pretty straight forward and easy. The seats are a snap...4 bolts, very obvious. The center console is 6 screws (if memory serves correctly).

If you get stuck on any specific part and would like help, just post the question or IM me: skydive814 (aol)

10 screws. The six you mentioned and the 4 for the radio area cover you have to pull to get the center console to slide out.

I got the rear drivers side 1/4 panel sheet metal nibbled out and d'matted the crap about of everything up in there:

This is where I'll mount my amps:
- Kenwood KAC-923
- PPI PCX440

one on top of the other.
