If it's anything like the Empeg, it caches quite a bit, so 99% of the time it's not reading from the HD. I have done a bit of offroading with mine running and never had a problem.

Supposedly laptop drives are made to take quite a beating. Even so, offloading isn't too hard on the drive, probably having it on a laptop running while you're walking around shakes it more.
